I was at the 100 yard benches.

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

You did well but ditch the bag and get rid of the bench. Chances are you aren't going to use them when going further back or hunting. Going prone off the bi-pod will help you learn technique and make improvements from 100-yrds backwards more comparable. Again, well done.

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

I agree on prone. I shoot better prone than from the bench. Load up the bipod, get a rear bag or monopod and give it a whirl. Lots of good info on here on natural point of aim, breathing, trigger control, etc.

Welcome to the game - it is fun...

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

In addition to the shooting prone suggestions already made, I would add that it might help your hold and trigger control to try practicing Lowlight's "Practical Tactical" spot drill, where you shoot one round at each of the dots on the printed target. Link:

Hope you find it helpful and good luck!

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

+1. Not too bad at all.

Work on the fundamentals for each shot. Get a natural point of aim for each shot (don't muscle the gun onto the target), work on breathing and trigger control. You can do all of this in your home by dry-firing. Practice setting up the shot, getting your natural point of aim. It will show a huge benefit when you get back out to the range with live ammo.

Getting off the bench at 100 will help you with shooting at longer distances where you probably won't use the bench. Changing from bench to prone can really open up your groups if you don't have the fundamentals down or have your rifle properly set up to fit you. Better to work that out now than develop habits that are going to be hard to break when you do start shooting prone.

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

Ive always shot groups prone, I havent been doing this long either. You will get groups down, you just gotta dry fire in your free time and work on lowering your heart rate, and I have learned that if you cock your right leg while prone it helps alleviate some heart beats. Oh, and if youve never shot prone before make sure your alignment is good. Just like golf 90 % is in the setup.

This helped me.

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

Just got back from my 2nd trip out. I only shot prone off the bipod and a few off a rucksack. Temp was 40* and there was no wind at all. Great sunny day. Anyway, I had some problems staying consistent, but will continue to work at it.
So here's some pics:

I noticed a few things today:
1. My bipod (Harris) has a slight cant to the left. I guess the flatter bottom of the HS Precision stock is causing a problem for the bipod.
2. My cheekweld is just not consistent at all. I'm using a stock pack with mousepad foam to raise it where I need it, but it just doesnt feel right. Might have to switch out to a Karston and see what that feels like.

Re: First time out. How'd I do?

tell ya what......more than good enough for now shooting groups

lots of people gonna disagree but here we go. STOP shooting groups.

start making each round it's own entity like it really is. 1 shot per.......(dot drill/clay pigeon/steel/whatever you want)

after all, its not benchrest so beyong making sure your rifle bullet combo works for you (it does), who the hell cares what size the group is.

and yes you can still analyze your form, just start logging your shots. a pattern will emerge and you will be better for using the log.
