Just wondered if anybody has an experience of these rifles and how they compare to say the early M40/M21 or the British L42's?

I thing the bipod looks "neat" (meaning not bulky rather than "cool") but I'm not sure how well it would work given its position...

The general layout and design seem ahead of the L42 and the original wooden stocked M40's, but I've no idea how well they shot?

There is a member here who goes by "Julien" who is a shooter from France. He has posted several times on the FRF1 and 2. There is a Google-powered Search function that might be able to locate those threads for you - I will try to find the link.

Bottom line is that they are comparable to the L42's or similar former MILSPEC bolt rifle that is/was "sniper-ized" - not as precise as a purpose-built LR accuracy rifle, but darn tough.

I believe they are based on the Mas 36 and these days the are chambre in the 7.62 Nato...

I have to say I like the pistol grip on these, and I can't recall anything production bolt action with anything similar..

Yhe first picture is of an old FRF1. it is based off the mas 36. it originally came with a 4x scope upgraded to 6x..the newer versions of the FRF2 have both 8x and 10x Scrome optics. quick release mounts. sythetic stocks. the barrels are covered by a thermal sheild. the optics have a BDC to 800M. the accuracy is limited by the 7.62 155grain fmj ammo and hovers around 1moa.

sniper.
is it any good? jeez i'd been thinking about a british L42 for the unique factor but this thing is right up the alley.

any idea on the availability outside the army?

Re: French FR F1 and FR F2 Sniper Rifles?

Hello

The receiver is not the same as the mas36 but it's very close, the FRF1 is in 7.5french caliber and the FRF2 in 7.62 NATO.
It's not a long range competion rifle but a military sniper rifle for 800 meters maximum.
It's very hard to find a FRF1 for a civilian and impossible for a FRF2.

aaah well that dashed my hopes.
i would loooooove to get one. it just looks so unique.
I understand the concept. MOA accuracy would be nice but its there for the unique factor rather than anything else.

Re: French FR F1 and FR F2 Sniper Rifles?

yeah ah well. its rare and they're still using it. sad these days. back in the 50's anything the military dumped got sold off to the public, nowadays they crush it.

i'll look into it.

Re: French FR F1 and FR F2 Sniper Rifles?

Those things are neat as hell!I had been wanting to build one for years and had accumulated an action and some MAS 49/56 mags to modify.A friend of mine wanted to learn riflesmithing so he traded me out of the prepped action, modified mag, stock and a 1919 Brownung barrel I had turned down to .990.With a little help he put it togather into an ugly but fine shooting rifle that is unique.I'll try to get a picture.
