GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!!+(1380 yard elk)

I just want to give a HUGE thanks to Moon, George and the rest of the guys at GA Precision. They took over a build for me that was a long time in the works else where. The gun turned out sweet! As always they turn out nothing but top quality work. This is a lefty for my Dad. It has one of the first designs of the Bighorn action. As always these things are smooth, and you got you love the floating bolt head. This is the third gun with the Bighorn, and if I ever do another build it will have this action.

I know how much everyone loves to see groups. These are the groups from breaking in the barrel. I did the same load as with my GAP 7wsm, and went a little higher and lower on the powder. Did not change the seating depth at all. 64-66 grains of H1000 180vld's. They all shoot good, but 65.5 ended up with the nicest group at 100 yards. Took the gun out to 1000 yards to see how it would do. Dialed up 24 MOA for 1020 yards. Just a guess on the speed . First shot was over the target. It end up taking 22.7 MOA to get on the steel going 2970fps. My Dad was loving it. He was stacking them in there.

So we went back out tonight just to confirm our dope for the cow elk hunt tomorrow. At 1020 yards his first shot was and inch out of the 2 inch black circle. Kill shot. After putting 5 more rounds on the steel we moved to some rocks. He was able to git a second round hit an a 12 inch rock at 1240 yards. I snapped some pictures of the gun just before we left. Hoping to get some good video of the hunt and some more shooting.

Thanks again Moon!

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!!

Nice! I can't wait until I get to see me new Bighorn.

Question: What height are those rings? I'm putting an SWFA 5-20 on my Bighorn, and I'm not sure whether I need low or medium American Rifle Company rings.

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!!

Your Pop has it made with that Cool stick!

Tubb contour is the perfect all around size for a multi purpose rifle. I think I'll get mine fluted next time.

Did you guys have this barrel melonited also?

What is a schneider tubb contour ?
Specific measurements, please.</div></div>

Thanks guys. I think it turned out sweet! I really like the stock pad over that plastic riser.

It is a Schneider brand barrel, with a David Tubb contour. Its the contour that David feels gives you the best accuracy. I just thought it looked good. I have no idea on the measurements. You would have to call Schneider.

Shooting the Berger 180 vld's

Well the practice payed off last night. We end up getting two elk down today. I got mine at 900 yards. My dad end up getting his at 1380 yards. Makes me so mad he can just come out like that and beat me. The student is not suppose to school the teacher. I was the one however dialing his scope, making wind calls, and making sure he was level. He just had to pull the trigger

Here is the aftermath. We did get my Dad's on video, but they were filming the wrong elk on mine. I will get it up soon. O well it was a dang good time.

My brother, dad, and me.

Our cousin the guide. Look at those BIG ears. That has to be Boone and Crockett.

Make sure you post your gun when it is done. Those are the low rings. I think they are .885

No. I don't see him shooting more then a few hundred rounds a year at most. Plus we where trying hard to get it done for this hunt. Moon really helped out with that. Did not want to hold him back. I have just under 2000 rounds in my GAP 7wsm and not slowing down.

Well let's put it this way. That was the 11th Nightforce with that reticial that we have used. We all love them. Just sad you can't get them anymore without custom ordering them.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: coues7</div><div class="ubbcode-body">How much does that rig weight?</div></div>

I am not sure. Somewhere between 12-15lbs. I will check. Weight was never a issue with my dad. Having a bad back and a total knee replacement. He is not going hiking anywhere with it anytime soon. Just a good gun to have fun with long range shooting, and to use on our yearly cow elk hunt.

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!! +(1380 yard elk)

Congrats to your dad, he must be proud of his son and damn proud to own such a nice gun made by his son.

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!! +(1380 yard elk)

Thanks! If we can get the inversion to clear out. Want to get some video of it.

Beautiful gun. Exactly what I want to build. Could you tell me the finished weight.

Congrats on the elk and beautiful pics.

Hey thanks!
I am not sure. I will get back to you. I will tell you this. It is NOT a light weight hunting rig. Does not really matter since my dad cant hike around with his bad knees.

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!!+(1380 yard elk)

Man thats beautiful, im so jealous, first from that amazing rifle and second to get a chance to shoot something that far and put it down, wow keep the pics coming.

Re: GAP 7wsm Bighorn action!!!+(1380 yard elk)

Awesome set up. What are you using for the rear bag? Looks like you have two. Did you find something that works for that weird notch in the sako stock?

That is not a sako stock. It an Accuracy International. The notch is for your right hand to grip the stock and pull into your shoulder. As for the shooting bags. One is my own. The other is a Tab-gear I believe. Three different shooters where shooting the gun that day. Just different bags for the different shooters. Also we where shooting other guns as well. They just happen to be sitting there for the picture.
Yes we were shooting at the far hill. 1230 yards. The road is over to the side. We were shooting in the middle of the road.
