Hello Everyone i have been going round and around trying to figure out what i should be putting my gun money into given that i am just now starting to build up my collection even though i have been around AR's and shooting family members guns for years. I figure i can save up around 3000$ by June however i do not know if i should spend that money on lowers and magazines (mostly magazines) for the AR15/SR25/ and my M&P 9mm. Then once i am sitting pretty with those items that are on the hotseat for a ban begin building up the lowers and purchasing optics or
if i am being a little paranoid and should just buy a quality rifle+Optic with a few magazines and enjoy.

Well I can tell you the ban they had planned banned shit like screws and springs Along with spare parts. So your best bet is to find a system that you like and buy two or more plus spare parts along with magazines and spare parts for those too. The dems are going for it all the next time they have the power to pass it....

There will be plenty guns lying beside the dead guys if I got that bad. Don’t worry about stockpiling weapons and ammo. It’s not like you will be blasting a thousand rounds practicing if the shit is banned and you won’t live long enough to shot thousands of rounds if you have to shoot that much in a firefight.

I'm in this dilemma too, what will be the smartest investment before the election season. I was leaning towards magazines and reloading components. I think the lowers are a good investment too, but I just don't know either.

If they ban more guns/accessories you're gonna be shit out of luck when it comes to actually enjoying all that shit without a grandfather clause. I would just buy the biggest and fastest firing reliable gun you can afford, buy at least ten mags, and never stop buying ammo.

The market is flooded with AR stuff currently. Are you wanting this for your future use or thinking you will stock pile and make neckbeard coin selling it during the next ban? What are you motivations? A 3k budget can get you 2 badass ARs. Or you can buy lowers for $50-100 depending on quality and Mags are $8-10 all day long.

Depends what your goals are:

Do you want to make a buck? Stocking up on lowers and mags may pay off if they implement a ban on them. Assuming they have a period before it goes into affect to sell your items at a premium price

Do you intend to stand up for the 2nd if SHTF? If so you won’t be carrying a backpack full of lowers. So invest in a great gun, decent amount of mags and the rest in ammo for practice etc

Buy what you want and enjoy it until you can't - life's too short.

Banning springs and screws huh lmao that reminds me of when they pushed to ban 80% lowers so this one company started selling a block of aluminum and calling it a 0% lower lol I dont know how they think they are going to be able to enforce this stuff. As if guns are the only things that use springs. Good info and you make a very valid point thank you.

I am all for defending the 2nd regardless of what the situation, but I think we're a long ways from that point. I'm not sure what the OP plan is but mines always about making money and using other peoples freak out, sounds bad, but other businesses have been doing it for a long time.

So far it is unanimously to just buy the rifles now and worry about the rest later. I am purchasing these for personal use. Depending on how many magazines I have in stock during a ban I might part a couple out but I'm not trying to hold these like stocks

I was going to say the OP was from Virginia, but I see he's from WA state. In VA, it's a very real possibility, with no grandfather provisions. Not good....

I guess if the OP is in WA then there is a ligit probably of a ban for him....... or at least a crazy high tax on everything.

Right @RyanScott ?

I would get lowers and mags. If I had to guess if anything passes they will grandfather in existing weapons. Then finish the builds later. During the Clinton era all the parts were available. I cannot see anyway to ban parts like triggers, barrels etc.. because they are all replacement parts. I can see an enormous tax on things as well as ammo.

If it’s for you, buy 2 MilSpec ar’s (Colt 6920, LMT defender, Sionics patrol rifle, etc) 10 mags for each, a few action springs, a spare bolt and lpk. Spend the rest on ammo. It should take ~10k rounds to wear out the barrel and a spare bolt.

Dependable accurate 556
Magazines
Ammunition
Body armor
————-
2nd round of spending:
First or another bolt action in 308 or 338lm which you can actually hit shit out to a km with.
Ammo for it.
—————
3rd round of spending:
First or another G17 or G19,
17rd and 33rd magazines
Bunch of 124gr 9mm ammo
——————
4th round of spending:
Quality reloading press
Dies for all your calibers
Reloading supplies for all your calibers including: reloading manuals, prep gear, lubes, brass, primers, projectiles, powders, etc.
——————
5th round of spending:
Night vision, long range observation, Tactical gear (carrier, magazine pouches, tactical bags), decent flashlights and a great tactical knife, icom system

Got all of the above already? Outstanding!
More magazines, ammo, reloading supplies, another 12ga Saiga and more shotgun ammo...

Stick with 556, 762(308), 9mm, 12ga as far as loaded commercial ammo for ban/ shtf scenario. Yes, my 6.5x55(s)can outshoot just about ant 308, however, 4 Nato calibers are listed above and likely can be sourced later... will my FiveSeven outshoot a 9mm glock - all day long- ammo availability for FiveSeven or PS90 in the “event”? Well, not easily.
Omitting 45acp, yes, due to magazine capacity limitations.
Favoring Glock? Yes. Simple, reliable and will shoot ANY ammo in any pressure load. Can I outshoot Glock with my HiPower? Every time. Is my Browning 200% dependable With ANY and ALL 9mm ammo - not exactly.

Plan and invest ahead, a lot easier to build up over time vs spending $25k or more all at once. When I quit smoking 8yrs ago, my wife deposited all money i would have spent/smoked weekly into my “gun account” plus a monthly bonus. So if you still smoking- switch your “investment direction”.

A lot of really good info...

I think what I am going to do is:
First Round:
Ar15 lower@100$
Ar10 Lower@180
10 magazines for AR15/M&P 9mm Compact@ 430$
Nightforce NX8@1750 (i will buy this used to save)
ammo i plan on buying two or three boxes per paycheck with. one to play with and one or two to put back.
Spend the rest on Building the lower into a rifle with a spare BCG and replacement parts kit. (Roughly 1200$ for what i want to build)

This will put me overbudget by about 700$ before any savings on buying the NX8 used but i will just have to save up a little longer... i cant just spend this type of money and get nothing but a serial number out of it i am dying to get back out there and shoot and as others have pointed out life is too short and predicting bans is too risky.

Second Round:
Build the AR10 into a rifle
Purchase 10 SR25 mags
Purchase some good glass (current favorites are the MK5 3.6-18 or the NX8 2.5-20) going to have to get behind them before i can make a decision on that one.

after that ammo ammo ammo and more mags.

Spend the Rest on Ammo
@KAIFS I hear you with the glocks and part of me wishes I liked them better because of how much cheaper the mags are but I dont I'm in love with the M&P and we are going to be together forever lol

There is no guarantee that a ban will come with a grandfather clause. Without that clause you might as well be lighting cash on fire.

I dont see them realistically being able to pass a ban that does not have a grandfather clause. Even california had a period of "registration" to grandfather your guns... which most people ignored.

Fun fact, last time I went to cali and gone to the range everybody there had removed their bullet buttons and were using standard capacity mags... I guess they figured that since this latest round of bullshit was too far and they were already criminals they might as well say fuck the rest of it too.

I am not advocating you break the law just telling you what I saw

All I can say is ' what good is a car without gas?

Someone that used to be here always said " BUY MORE AMMO! "

Along with the great pieces of advice above, a portion of any gun budget should also include a portion going to your favorite gun rights organization. This is often overlooked, but absolutely critical for staving off the day our liberty disappears.

a ban withOUT a grandfather clause will mean confiscation. Confiscation will mean 400million or better weapons will have to be taken away from people (there is no way with deficit as is US can afford any type of a meaningful buyback which will yield any meaningful results) and by whom? it will be a SHTF scenario and if you were not a member of armed services or a LEO, in other words, have no combat/tactical firearms training - start thinking about it RIGHT NOW. Over by me we (taxpayers) financed a terrific facility to train tactical operators at part of the condition was, regular civilians HAD to be allowed to use the facility and training classes had to be made available to the regular public. https://classes.fvtc.edu/Classes/category/CAT0000067/personal-protection-safety if you do not own a weapon of your own - it will be furnished/provided to you for the duration of the class (cost of classes includes ammo/body armor/instructor/range time) - get on it SOON.
Will something happen sooner vs. later as far as gun ownership - I am certain there will be attempts to infringe on our rights, shit, I fled Socialist Country just to be living in one almost 30yrs later and already feel its right around the corner.
Again, wheels for your ATV or car or a terrific rifle - should be a no brainer to anyone at this point ..

You should be buying Mags now-never going to be more plentiful or less $$ then now. Ammo should be purchased regular too-I try and buy monthly just like I contribute to my IRA and Savings Accts-I treat it like an investment. Buy a few LPKs and some BCGs too-hell PSA has good quality ones for cheap. All this can be done while you're figuring out what to stockpile.

$180 for an AR10 lower? These are pretty decent and on par with aero precision receivers In my experience. Buy their pins.

$109 for an upper and lower.

Spend a little $ on the things that are less glorious as well. Do you have some spare chap stick and heart burn meds? I don't want to gun fight in the streets with chapped lips and heartburn. That sounds terrible. Get some extra batteries for everything, that illuminated reticle on the NX8 is sweet. Get a little pile of antibiotics. Don't die from an infected tooth, antibiotics are cheap. Spend 200$ on some dumb stuff then start building a rifle.

Assuming you have most or all the weapon systems in place, my top 5

1. Ammo (raw materials if you reload)
2. Suppressors
3. Training; emphasis on pistol/carbine
4. Standard capacity mags (Magpul pmags are inexpensive and reliable)
5. More Ammo

I really like the aero stuff especially for the ar10 platform since there is so much compatibility issues between brands. With aero I can basically just build an aero gun with a good trigger and barrel and call it a day. I am really interested to test out if the aero enhanced uppers help relieve the stress on the barrel enough to noticeably dffect accuracy.

Buy a good ar 15
Good optic
30 mags

if you can scrape together the cash, buy a NV setup with a good laser and IR flashlight.
Buy some plates too.
Hmmm now you have me thinking about NV... last time I looked to get good NV was like 20k is there anything more affordable these days That is still good resolution?

Primary Arms has Hexmags for $6.99

I talked to Mike at criterion a while back and he said that they are seeing problems with the aero enhanced uppers as they torque the gas tube as they heat up and shift poi.

he said to just use the old M5 uppers.

I only buy magpul gen 3s and lancer AWMs... I am really picky about my mags and optics and guns in general lol

This is good advice right here.

Wow good to know thank you I never would have considered that you just saved me some $$$ and a lot of headaches lol

Don't forget enough food and water for your family, to comfortably (as in not eating mush) ride out a the minimum, a 2 week or so disruption in supplies. Just make a rotating system and buy more of what you normally use every day for meals.
You'll probably find you are happy to have it for all kinds of reasons (including being able to wait for sales).

I omitted food/medical gear/water/fuel because thread pertained to a BAN for weapons vs. being a general SHTF/End of the World/zombie apocalypse :)....
I also purposely omitted 22lr, because I can’t imagine anyone here not owning at least one great 22 rifle and a few K ammo for it.

Absolutely it's crazy how fast it goes downhill I have some family in CA in the middle of the power turn offs and everything from grocery stores to gas stations were completely shut down/sold out. My mom had to drive over 2 hours away to find a grocery store with food... I can only imagine how quick it would become a dog eat dog world if things went just a tad bit more sideways than without power for a week.

Thats when you learn how to hunt and process your own meat. There are alternatives to refrigeration :)

Food, water, ways to self sustain, form a local mutual assistance group, any necessary training you lack, and maybe some spare parts and ammo.

True that. What would you say is the best overall SHTF hunting/defensive round? I was thinking that between 5.56 and .22lr you have prettymuch everything covered... I remember my great grandaddy talking about his hunting style for whitetail one time and he said he never took a shot over 100 yards and always went for a headshot to preserve meat and I was thinking that in the hands of a skilled hunter 5.56 would be just as capable as his 30-06 in those conditions...Any thoughts?
