HD Video Cam Gun mount... UPDATED with VIDEO

So I've been wanting to film some of the gun comps and desert outings that I've been doing and bought a Contour HD mini video camera...

http://www.vholdr.com/

It's a decent small camera, flash based drive, light and full 1080p HD. The other camera I was looking at was the Go Pro Hero HD...

http://www.goprocamera.com/

After opening it, I was satisfied with the features and picture quality but I found the mounting system to be worthless. It's so poorly made, I snapped the main mount in two trying to remove it. After a looking at all the options I found this:

http://www.xvusa.com/

It's a real deal camera mount. No joke that thing is built like a brick shit house. I wanted to be able to mount the camera on my carbines and rifles as well as a helmet so I can run different POVs, so it's imperative that the mounting solution is flexible and removable. What I like about the Cam Clamp is it's fastened to the helmet or other mount with this industrial velcro called 3M Dual Lock. That stuff is no joke.

http://www.itapestore.com/3mduallocksj38701x50yds.aspx

I ordered the Cam Clamp and wasn't let down. It's as strong and well made as it looks, it's also really light (tho doesn't look it). In no time, I had it mounted to my helmet. (It looks pink in these pics but it's really more of a reddish color)

Then I had to figure out a way to mount it to my carbines. So I had a broken optic and cut the picatinny mount off it. (Can you guess what that's from?) Then I attached the super velcro and voila.... Gun Mount!

We use these. http://vio-pov.com/products/tactical.php

They are the best available, have a screen on the recording deck so you can pin point specifically where the camera is positioned.

The benefit is also that the cameras are water proof and the recording decks can be outfitted with the H20 Pouch http://vio-pov.com/product_information/vio_h2o_pouch_gallery/ thus making the entire unit water and weather proof. They have a massive list of ancillary parts and mounting accessories including bases, rings, power packs, hard wire 12v adapter. http://vio-pov.com/products/all_accessories.php

I have used pretty much everything on the market including the $3,000.00 Sony camera kits and this is the best laid out by far...

Good eye Salmonaxe-

That mount was made from an eotech that never ran right... so I cut that fu*ker apart and ground it flat!

This is a good point, gunshot vibration is pretty severe and doesn't let up. It did shake loose one of the mount screws (I need to locktite those)

Will post vids in a sec...

Re: HD Video Cam Gun mount...

Update--

So everything went well at my test shoot with the new Contour HD and rail mount. I recorded in 1080p and 720p. The main difference is the 720p files have more of a fisheye view and smaller overall size.

Everything ran well, the batteries, the switches and the recording. One thing I had trouble with is forgetting to rotate the lens when I moved the mount perpendicular to the handguard... and everything was shot on it's side. oops. My friend noticed my mistake and thankfully I corrected it without shooting to many files.

The only downside came at the end of the day when the shock of the gun impulse shook the bolts loose from the mount and I lost one. Still works without it.

Here I am shooting plates--- notice the HD cam is on TOP of my handguard, blocking the aimpoint view.So while keeping both eyes open, I could see the steel with my non-dom eye and my brain superimposes the dot on the target.

Now here is what the gun cam's pov...

Then I did some transition drills with my buddy. (I love this pov)

This is what it looks like with is the cam mounted on the side...

I forgot to bring my helmet and take shots from that pov, will do it next month when I go to the desert.

Enjoy...

Twenty20 Camera (Vholdr/Contour) has a Picatinny Mount that will be available mid-late February. It's designed to mount their camera to any weapon equipped rail...

Re: HD Video Cam Gun mount... UPDATED with VIDEO

Digging up an old thread here... I just bought a contour roam with the above picatinny mount (which sucks)... Looking for any other ideas that I could used to mount my camera to.

Thanks in advance,

Re: HD Video Cam Gun mount... UPDATED with VIDEO

I've got a strap-on helmet mount for my GoPro I've been meaning to try when shooting. And I've seen some video using one of the adhesive mounts stuck to a PRS stock. Too many projects, not enough time.

First post and a question. Has anyone used this to attach to a shotgun???

I am looking for one that attaches to a shotgun and am at a loss.

Thank you in advance!

Re: HD Video Cam Gun mount... UPDATED with VIDEO

Boy that tape is expensive! The only 0lace I can find by the yard is $17/yard PLUS $9 shipping for something that weighs around two ounces....

Any suggestions as I only need a foot or so...

Thanks.

I run the new contour roam on my LWRC with the above mount ( it's a little loose but if you slide your rail panel underneath the rear tang it tightens things up).

As for a shotgun mount... The Contour roam will come with an adhesive flat base mount (although I'd replace that with a 3M product) that could be used on the left hand side of the receiver (that's if your a right hand shooter). The camera offers excellent video but the sound capabilities are far behind a go pro.

I'll post some pics of my set ups ( I also run this camera on my Z7 bow and that works extremely well).

Good write up on cool product.

Re: HD Video Cam Gun mount... UPDATED with VIDEO

Too bad no one makes a good one that shows things through the scope. This would be cool for predator hunting but wouldn't really get you anything for long range.
