Well i was hunting for a used hound and the bugger got sold out on me. So....did some calling to some shops today.

I really like the Remington 700VTR but didnt see too many people braggin on her.

Sooo that put me at a Savage 10FP or a Remington SPS or SPS Varmit. I know i want a .308 and that The NEW price i have found on both the 10ft and SPS Varmit are 547 and 550.00. What is the better piece? Im getting it for playing around, getting my feet wet, and doing a little hunting.

Re: HELP! Need help picking first rifle!

the VTR has had a rough road, the triangular barrel isnt very good. But the rifles you mentioned are all great starter guns, SPS Tactical can be had for around 560, but there is one for sale in the for sale section, dont know anything about savages im a remington guy

Re: HELP! Need help picking first rifle!

Whats the difference in a SPS and SPS Tactical and what is the difference in a SPS Varmit and a SPS-V? Im all kinds of confused. I really dont want a 20" barrel. I like a 24" barrel.

Re: HELP! Need help picking first rifle!

I own almost every rifle mentioned in this thread so far. A 10fp, Rem SPS, Rem VTR and I can tell you that the VTR or Savage dropped into a decent stock shoot very well. My Savage shoots 3/8's MOA and the two Rems shoot about the same as the Savage, all are well under MOA. The advantage of the VTR is its weight, It is like having three very heavy flutes.

Not sure, never really did much research in the subject. I would think 24" would be ideal for a 308. Which would be better for distance? I know that the police swat teams use the 20" barrels and other agencies that have longer shots use the 24" barrels. I wish the SPS-V Had a 24" barrel. It is listed with a 26. Is a 20" adequate enough on a .308 for out to 6-700 yards.
