So I am getting into the long range game a little, and don't want to break the bank. I know I can go out and drop as much as my first 3 (cars) on optics, but lets face it, I'm not made of money, and I am just starting in the long range hobby. My life will not depend on the scope, and I just want to have some fun. Furthermore I can get a great deal (nearly 40-50%) off MSRP through a buddy on a scope.

I know the adage of buy once cry once. But in this case what about whimper once, and then cry later.

Do the Elite 6500 series stack up favorably against Leupold, Vortex, Burris XTR's, Sightron SIII's, etc. I don't need to drop the coin on Kahles, S&B, or USO right now. Thanks for any advice. Information from personal experience with a 6500 would be great.

i like my 2.5-16 pretty well. but the burris xtr has better glass better knobs and more features they can be picked up pretty cheap on gunbroker. for what you get. if you can find one with a mildot reticle and the ballistic mildot. the turrets on my 2.5-16 do not line up. it makes it easy to loose whether you are a click above or below where you want to be. the burris knob covers screw on so you can thread it up and down to put you on the 0 revolution line. so go up one turn and the 1 revolution line will show. no counting and writing down which line you are on for zero or being half way in between to lines at zero

I have the 2.5-16 with Mil Dot. As the others mentioned, MOA knobs, SFP, but my knobs do line up, and the side focus is dead on. Can't compare the glass to a Burris XTR as I've never looked through one but I can compare it to a Leupy MK 4 and a NXS and I would say it hangs with both of those in clarity very well.

i did not think my bushnell elite 2.5-16 or my 3.5-21 hdmr compared with my leupold mark 4 in glass quality. the burris i though came close. my subjective opinion though. i think the weaver tactical line has better glass than my bushnells. three favorites mark4 hdmr weaver edmr. they are all a lot more than the bushnell .2.5-16. some of the weavers are in that price range.

The NEW Burris XTR II look very nice and for the price they are going to give Bushnell a run for it money. I feel the Bushnell HDMR scopes are built more solid. I also feel the Burris XTRII price point is very good for what you get.
