to wait for a build to be completed? This is my first custom build but it started in Feb. Is this out of line as far as time goes? Thanks and I am just very excited to get it. I was told it would be done for a competition I had in July but it wasnt and now it still isnt......

Re: how long is too long?

I'm new to this sport as well and, honestly, I can't answer your question with any amount of certainty but that seems a little excessive. I'm having a rifle built myself, just put the order in back in August and I will be getting it in 4-5 weeks. Just curious, but what are you having built (specs)?

Re: how long is too long?

Each smith is different. I have been told some people hold over a year to get a rifle back when dealing with certain companies. Some will not start the clock until they have your stuff. I talk to my smith months in advance and I get on the list of work and I drop off my rifle a couple weeks before he needs it and then I pick it up when he said it was done.

I call just to ask on the status is not out of line.

Re: how long is too long?

Depending on the smith and the parts he has on hand and what you ordered it could take a while. You might have to wait on a stock or barrel or getting in line behind others who have ordered before you. Stocks can take 6 months alone to come in and barrels could be the same if not more. This is why it's usually faster to have all the parts and send them to the smith.

It sucks sometimes having to wait but it's a necessary evil sometimes depending on what you want and who you want it from. You can check in with the smith from time to time but don't be one of those guys who calls every week and takes the smith away from their work. Good initial communication on timelines is the best way and then check in close to that timeline's end.

Re: how long is too long?

i feel builders shouldn't give an eta on a build when there are so many factors that are out of their control. i'd rather get an honest "it'll be done when it's done" than get told "it will take three months" and nine months later, it's still not done.

now if ALL parts are in hand, it's not unreasonable to give an eta on a build.

Re: how long is too long?

He is a fantastic smith, I have been given different dates and then nothing, I am not bugging him but I did ask for an eta and have not gotten an email back. I have changed some things on the rifle, as I have had a lot of time to wait and contemplate the direction. Nothing crazy and the parts are in and have been in. I can wait, I just want to know how long is too long to wait. I guess it is a moving target and I will just sit tight. Thanks for the insite guys.

Re: how long is too long?

I have learned two things about smiths.

1. If they can do it fast or cheap; they are probably able to do it fast because of that.

2. If they are slow it is probably because they are backed up for a reason, normally because everybody and their brother is waiting on them because they are good.

Patience is a virtue that modern society has lost but should regain.

Re: how long is too long?

I ordered a stock from Sharp Shooter Supply. I did some research on the company before I placed the order, and the main complaint was wait time. Everyone that had a stock from SSS loved it, so I went with them. They told me 6-10 weeks, but I was prepared for 6 months due to others experiences. It's only been about 20 weeks, and I think it will be done before the new year. I got an email from them a week and a half ago saying that there's only 10 in front of me.

Re: how long is too long?

Been waiting on my 1st build since last December, was intitially told 4-5 months, but build times change. The smith building my rifle has always replied to my Email and phone calls quickly. I try not to think about it but that doesn't work out so well. Just working on the patience it taking alot longer than I thought.
