Hunting & Fishing Hunter killed in Catahoula Parish

What a shame...


JONESVILLE— State police say a Jonesville man was shot and killed while hunting in the Catahoula Wildlife Refuge.

Fifty-two-year-old Boatner K. Smith, also of Jonesville, was hunting about 5:50 Monday morning <span style="font-weight: bold">when he shot at something moving in the brush</span>. Smith’s bullet struck 63-year-old Rod Gordo, who was killed instantly.


The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was asked to investigate the shooting by the Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Department. Smith is an officer at the Catahoula Correctional Center, but is not a commissioned deputy.


Authorities have not arrested Smith, saying the investigation is ongoing.


An autopsy will be performed by the Catahoula Parish Coroner’s Office.

That is a shame but it seems to happen every hunting season. I never understand why a person would pull the trigger without coducting a visual identification on the target he is about to unleash a bullet against.

"when he shot at something moving in the brush" Since when does something moving in the brush give you the right to fire at it. Come on people it could be anything. Never fire until you know what your about to kill.

WTF... This is why I don't hunt public land. Idiots shooting at "something moving in the bushes". I don't know about LA hunting regs, but 5:50 am is an hour and a half before sunrise there (an hour before legal shooting time on a whitetail in GA), so I have no idea why someone would even think about pulling the trigger then. I guess the key word there is "think", which this guy obviously wasn't doing.

It is a tragic, terrible incident. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid people are. There is no excuse other than pure negligence for something like this to happen.

I have taught Hunter Education, and hunted most of my entire life and can't imagine shooting at "something" moving in a bush. It is truly beyond comprehension to me.

Precisely why I don't ever or will ever hunt on Public Land. At least on private property you can choose your hunting partners, and know who the assholes are, and where they will be!!!

and as much as I struggle with paying Texas lease fees, at least the chances of being shot by some drunk idiot are drastically reduced...

After all the stories of idiots doing this you would think a light would go off in their heads, "hey maybe the noise in the brush is a person, perhaps i should hold my fire until i know for sure". I say put him in the bushes and let a family member of the deceased shoot in there, if he lives ,he is lucky if not... what comes around goes around. Freakin retard!!

I just posted this elsewhere but its fitting...
A few years ago I was guiding an elk hunt here in Northern NM. We had a gang of six from Missouri on that hunt. Sitting around the fire one of these guys says "I was walking down the road and had a sound shot, but didn't get anything" I asked him what a "sound shot" was. He said "it's when you hear them in the brush and shoot at the sound". I told if he did anything like that around me- we were done and he was a dumbass for doing shit like that. His answer was "well no one should have been in the brush". They exist, unfortunately.

What an a$$!

My wifes father was killed in spring gobbler season 20 years ago by her brother-inlaw .These guys hunted together for years and I thought they were some of the safest hunters until this happend.Her father was going hunting and Pete had to work on this Saturday So her dad decided to hunt Pete's Area .Well Pete gets up for work and decided to go hunting instead.So he goes to the area he normally hunts and hears some noise in a bush puts his scope on it and see's some black in the bush and fires his 243 thinking he killed a turkey he walks about 80 yards to find his shotgun that her dad was using laying on the ground.then confusion sets in and hhe finds her dad laying dead behind the bush.Her father was wearing camo but had it unzipped a little bit exposing the black t-shirt underneath which I feel is what Pete was shooting at.Pete died 2 years later I truly believe from the stress of this accident.But make no mistake he fucked up and broke the number one rule.I have not hunted since.

Friend of mine was shot by a fellow turkey "hunter" several years ago in Mississippi. Another brush shooter. Fortunately for my friend a 6" tree in the brush soaked up most of the 4-6 duplex shot. He still got pretty roughed up.

I know the feeling, was hunting with a friend when he shot himself on accident. It changes the way you look at things forever.

Very sad for the family of the hunter who was killed.

I hunt the land of a retired game warden. As we retrieved my deer this year he was telling me a story of giving a guy hell for observing him lowering a chamber-loaded shotgun from a treestand, muzzle up.

The next day, I read that somewhere in the state a teenager fatally shot himself in the abdomen doing that very thing.

I refuse to hunt around people I don't know.
