Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I dont think that the Gemtech was designed around precision shooting. I have not sent mine back yet just lazy on my part. I still continue to shoot it each time I go out. I am going 2moro and will put some rounds thru it again.
I would not go with Gemtech again. Next one will be SAS more than likely.
I will update 2moro night, usually my 200 yrd groups are much better with it than my 100yrd groups. The POI shift is repeatable.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I'll have to agree. The HVT works well on my AR's but not on my bolt gun. I've decided to try and sell mine for a "dedicated" bolt gun suppressor.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

Though I do not have the HVT, I do have TPRS which is its predecessor. Its is a bilock and I have nothing bad to say about it. It rides on a PSS that i had cut down to 20" and has 300 rds down it. My baffles are dont have the key holes, just round. Gemtech did all the work and they mounted the bilock ears @ 0 and 180, im not sure if its critical but mine is a shooter. At 100 yds im usually between .5-.7, 200-1.3-1.7,Ive got plenty of targets that ive kept. I would like to find someone in Ohio who has the HVT so that we could swap and see if its the can or the rifle.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I dont much care for Gemtech. Have heard their cans, nothing special.... They are waaayyy to big and their staff is not very friendly. At shot show 09 we went by their booth to handle a few cans and look at how they were constructed. Everytime we picked one up we were greeted with a sharp "guys dont try to take that off" and after we asked several times to look down into one they just shrugged and said give us a few minutes.

Im glad I went with QSM and AAC for my rifles. At least they are friendly and their cans work beyond description!

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I have a Gemtech HVT (Bi-Lock) that I run on an H&S Precision HTR and a DPMS SASS. The POI change on the bolt gun is 1" left 1/2" down every time so I can handle that. The SASS is the exact same spot every time. I have shot some incredible groups with the HVT for me. And, what I mean by that is around .38" 5 shot groups at a 100. I am never that good of a shot - believe me. I was amazed how quiet it was and how much recoil it reduced on the 308's. I have read all the reviews on the HVT and frankly I was scared to shoot it when I got because I thought I was going to get pissed. But, in the end it worked out well. So it goes to show you don't believe everything you read. Trust through verification.

That's awesome for you and I've heard of others having great results as well. Me, I had AWEFUL results that I documented on many occasions and different rifles. Not to worry though, Gemtech is taking care of me.

Can you do me a favor? When you get a chance, tell me which way the "keyhole" is pointed when the can is mounted please. I have a hunch I know which way it is facing.

Sorry, not yet I can't.

If you're having real problems with your HVT, my suggestion would be to contact Gemtech. IMHO, you need to make sure it's the can and not other variables like ammo, rifle, shooter error, etc first though.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

Black X and Topo - I can say that every time I have spoken to Gemtech they have always treated me well and have gone out of their way to spend time talking to me and helping me if I need something. But, I also have not had issues with my HVT. But, I have to say that when I shoot it with the gas gun it does make a mess to clean up. I had it out yesterday on the range. I find the SASS POI does not move much from can off and can on. My bolt gun moves about 1" left and 1" down.

When I got it back from Gemtech it was a 12 and 6 position but I have also done one myself on another rifle and it more like a 10 and 4 and I found it really doesn't matter. Just turn the can around the horn until you feel the holes hit and then push and twist. I talked to Gemtech on Friday and I asked them what they use on the threads to tighten them down and they said they use graphite that is heat tolerant. I asked them if it was ok to use locktite and they said, sure, in fact it is better for making sure it remains tight but not as heat tolerant.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I got my HVT out of the safe and took look at it. I have a Bi-Lock adapter on mine so when you look at the suppressor from the bi-lock adapter (from the back) the key hole is aligned at a 0/360 degree so when you put it on the rifle you twist it so it would be at a 90 degree angle. I think I am looking at it right and not being a retard. My bolt gun likes the HVT but my SASS I am not convinced of the HVT use on it yet. It may just be the gas gun issues. I am new at suppressors so I am learning. If you want a picture of the stacks let me know and I can send to you.

Slick Rick - no I have not. I don't have a chrono yet as that is my next purchase. One of many things I need. But, I am interested to find out that answers too.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

The oblong part would be in line with the bi-lock keys - straight up and down. If you need a picture of the HVT send me a PM with your email address and I can send it to you to make sure we are talking the same thing.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I have a theory that the baffle stack, if pointed either straight up or straight down makes a difference in accuracy and POI change. When my baffle stack originally had the oblong holes pointing straight up, POI shift was 1moa down and I think accuracy was pretty good. After a change in the baffle stack orientation where the stack was pointing at 4:30, the POI changed to 4moa low and 3moa right IRCC. Also this is when I noticed a significant drop in accuracy.

Could it just have been coincidence?

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

I am not sure if it is or not...have you spoken to Gemtech about your theory to see what they say? One question I do have is - I understand the movement but is it affecting overall accuracy or is it just changing your point of impact?

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

-X,
I just checked mine. I have the thread on version so I dont know if that is what you are testing or not. Anyway, mine is just a bit past 12 o'clock when threaded on. I have about 5moa of drop @ 100 yards from unsuppressed zero, and accuracy suffers from that of unsuppressed rifle.

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

My HVT has from day one worked like a champ

I did however develop load specifically for HVT, load without can shoots sub MOA...shoots much better with HVT on about 1/3 better

Not seeing if you guys did load development for HVT??

I did as i dont see how adding HVT would not change barrel harmonics

Re: Got my Gemtech HVT today

Your missing my point
People spend hours doing load work for a new barrel

Now hang a 20oz weight on the end it will change dynamics
you gotta develop load for that

Firstly how will rifle be shot mainly suppressed or not?

If like most your going to shoot it suppressed then work up a load with can on
Mine suppressed will shoot quarter size groups at 300, and still shoot sub MOA with CAN removed.
Comparing Cans with a standard factory load just means one of them prefers that load better than others
This has zero reflection on potential accuracy of other CANS with a correctly worked up load
There are no freebies you gotta do some work, sure some get lucky and there combo just works with everything
Dont blame equipment if your not willing to invest time
