Hello all, first I want to say I am not new to painting(rifles either) but at the same time I am not the greatest at it, and I am wanting to paint my spec m40a3's spec OD stock like Shawn B's old McM return. Any sugestions on how he did the swirls(looks like a marbel mold job from McM almost) in the butt stock with the earth color? the colors are Earth, a yellowish color and tan right? DO you think the brown is on top of the yellow or vice versa? as for the leading edges being worn on the leading edges showing the OD green underneath I will replicate that with a fine grit sandpaper.
SO basically how would you approach making it as close as possible? I wonder how the 8541 did that job with just a spray can.
Also don't give me "its not about looks" speel cause M40's are sexy. For those of you that don't know the stock I speak of here ya go:

Re: I need some help from good painters

Just use a stencil and hold it a couple inches above the base coat for the earth color. Recreating the wear on the edges maybe a quick wipe with acetone to remove the paint, then rough the edges with sandpaper, sticks, brush, and rocks.

I agree just use a stencil or like what I did and use an old broom with the straw bristles and cut some off and lay them out how you would like. Test them on a piece of cardboard. Then paint the rifle 1 solid color, use the stencil and paint over the rifle once and let dry, then paint over it again alternating the stencil with another color, do these steps over until you get the desired look and color pattern you want.

I tried it out on an airsoft gun with OD Green and Coyote Tan and it isn't too bad.

The pics i posted used stencils? well i will blow up the pics as much as possible and trace the dark browns. as for the colors what yellow and brown is that? the yellow really has me confused but I will have to go to walmart and look at the selection, but honestly I am one of those color blind guys and hate to run back and forth to walmart getting different paints.

BTW: nice paint job bensen! how does your can attach? looks like I can still see the MB

1. Paint rifle with Krylon
2. Use the damn rifle and it will wear the paint.

I feel like I have seen this exact question asked about that same rifle before. I thought the person was an idiot both times.

Exactly. He was an idiot.

Paint it, use it, paint it again if you want.

HAHA

It's and airsoft gun. I tried my painting skills on that before I tried it on one of my rifles.

Ha nice benson and for those of you that think I am an idiot for asking how to do something that OBVIOUSLY looks cool, is not cool. I understand the real deal return stock is real deal worn, nut its just as easy to mimick, but if you took the time to read, I did state I already know how to use and make it look used the questions were what colors are used on that stock? and how was that originally done BEFORE being worn.

I am tired of having to explain myself to people who don't read and don't want to post anything constructive. This site would be better off if it was only used by people that weren't on computers all day on message boards...
