Not sure if this belongs in 'equipment', but since we are looking for equipment suggestions that might work well in tandem with a truck this was ma best guess.

So we are limited still to shooting on a hunting lease until August or so. Last night we found a way to get 783 yards by using an adjacent field while the cattle have been shifted to another part of the property, but with the topo we are down in a depression. Even in my bud's jacked up truck prone won't be high enough to see the steel on the range. We plan to employ our thermal hunting m.o. standing in bed resting off top of cab which will allow us to see the range steel. I'm wondering if some of you guys have any ideas on getting more stable? I mean this will work, but we are open to any suggestions please. Thanks!

Ok thanks! We have had great luck piling up hogs this way, but something ya never know there can be better ways to get er dun.

i'm not entirely sure there is a more stable way to shoot like that. any time you can take advantage of a "modified prone" position... do it.

it will always be more stable than resting your rifle on something.

    Good luck!

It’ll sit on anything, I don’t think you have any imagination. Would you like me to take a picture of it somewhere else so you can feel like I read his post?

show me a pic of using that bag and arca mount on the roof of a truck standing in the bed.

i 100% agree that set up would be useful for a lot of applications. but i don't see how for shooting like he's describing.

And my apologies. based on your picture, i thought that YOU thought he meant shooting from anywhere on a vehicle. hence, why you shared shooting out of the window. I initially thought of that as well until i read his entire post and realized he was specifically talking about shooting from standing in the bed and off the top of the cab.

you literally just asked me "would you like for me to take a picture of...."

    so i said yes...

I see that you edited your initial reply to me.

If you really want me to go take a picture, you’ll have to give me a bit. Dog jacked up my knee real good and I’m moving slow.

I wouldn’t suggest shit that doesn’t work, it’s a heavy bag with a plate and a mount for a ball head. It’s just another tool in the tool bag, like a tripod, or a bipod.

I really didn’t think I’d have to get super fucking Barney style with this shit.

no no, it's not that serious. you don't need to do that.

Carry on. sorry I got you frazzled. Hope your knee heels up

I would just throw a moving blanket over the roof of the truck and rock on, Ive done it before, if you have tac sup or hawkhill bipod feet a small something hard so they dont scratch the roof. Probably not needed but possible so: dont shoot a massive caliber over the windshield or somehow block the blast to avoid cracking it.
The wind moves both you and the truck so its not ideal but you gotta do what you gotta do to shoot. Tell your buddies to sit still when youre shooting.

Copy that thanks. We use moving blankets on the roof plus when shooting off hood of truck we use 'em so we don't ding paint with belt buckles. We have a shooting platform at 100 that is a joke it's about as stable as a unicycle on ice so anything else is an improvement. Thanks guys

You didn’t get me frazzled. You pissed me off with your initial reply. Nothing new, I get pissed off a lot.

You’re talking about using bags, and this is literally a bag, with a ball head on it. Pull the ball head and flip it, and it’s a rubberized V bag. It works really well, it’s just not a shooting company’s bag.

it looks awesome. i could see it being useful for a lot of stuff. i kinda want one. did you make it yourself?

however.... i don't think it's remotely the best tool for the job for the scenario OP is describing. there is nothing to drape the bag over like the window sill of your car door.

that was my thought process. i'm sure it could be done. but assuming the OP has a bipod - a bipod and rear bag (even YOUR bag as a rear bag - would always be more stable IMO)

Don’t worry about it. I’m out.

My comment doesn't really help you in your specific case, but...

We shot from bed of (slow) moving trucks on my farm. Talk about hard. Try to focus on nothing but the target and your cross hairs... smooth pulls, very rapid reloads (w/ a bolt gun). And you do need to reverse lead the target, but in all honestly, smooth pulls are the most effective thought for the brain. The best platform I have found is the Warhorse Tactical Udder (has different name now) on side of bed...

We have also shot from floating boats, which is even harder than moving trucks.

best of luck with your lane/truck combo.

I've seen a guy use a lumber rack on his pickup. He had a platform that extended over the cab, but also came back along one side so he could also shoot two guys primarily off the side. It extended a foot or so outside of the rails that ran the length of the bed but only about 1/2 the width of the bed. The guys sat on tall stools and shot side by side.. like a really tall bench.

I sure liek that DIY taget cam you linked nice work! I'm going to try a slightly easier(hopefully not futile)option I read about with a wifi enabled baby monitor with hotspot to ipad? Saw some pics of it being used at 1200 yards on a Ruger forum. I *think* I could build your cam, but the time factor right now isn't on my side. Are you an engineer or something?

Just a heads-up. Don’t want to piss on anyone’s parade but make sure to check your local regulations.

In many states it is illegal to shoot from any vehicle. Does not matter if you are in it, on it, or resting your rifle anywhere on it while the gun is loaded.

Different jurisdictions may enforce more aggressively than others. Just be aware.

That may be a law related to the taking of game animals. Lots of states have it, but game laws and rules for shooting can be quite different.

I shoot from the truck often.... just leave the rubber feet on your bipod and have your rear bag handy. Stand in the bed, put the rifle on top of the cab, and keep your shoulders in front of your hips.
