Gonna pick up a Sako 338LM sporter weight tomorrow that I bought from a guy I've know a while. I will be rebarreling and restocking shortly.
Rifle comes with over 300 rds of ammo and brass,(NO HEADSTAMP) dies and Leupold 4.5X14 Tactical with mildot.
So basically I need to get a couple of questions answered.
What twist rate seems to be more favorable with the mid range to heavier bullets and what barrel length?

That is where I like to be.

My AIAW in 338LM has a MTU contour Bartlein-like an axle.I have shot it with the brake off. You wouldn't want to fire 20 rounds plus sighters with 300SMK's.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

I can shoot my TRG-42 for 50 rounds comfortably in a day with its very effective muzzle brake. I shot it once without the brake, just to see what it was like. I will NOT do that again!

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

In the very early 90s I had a Weatherby MKv chambered in 338LP 28" Hart MTU barrel and a McHale stock. With the 250 scenars it wasn't that bad with no brake. That said there is a big difference between 250s and 300s.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

I was at an F class match this past weekend. I asked around, nobody had ever heard of someone shooting F class with a 338 Lapua. 22 lbs is not sufficient to shoot one without a brake.

I used to own a Sako TRG-S 338 LM. No brake and no recoil pad. I shot 10 rounds in a sitting once with 250gr black hills. You will not ever want to shoot a 2 day 120+ shot F class match.

338 LM is a great round for long distance shooting, especially tactical where brakes are allowed. You do not want to try it without a brake so F class is out for the round.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

I have a Surgeon built Remedy in 338. I am waiting for the supressor tax stamp, so in the meantime I am shooting it without a brake. It weighs in at around 25 pounds, and is relatively comfortable to shoot without the brake, though around 50 rounds is all I want to shoot in a day presently. I think as long as you have a rifle heavy enough, it would be doable if you are not very recoil sensative. However, the Sako TRG42 weighs in at 11 3/4lbs without optics, and I have shot one with a brake that has noticibly more recoil than mine without the brake.
So, I don't know what the sporter weight weighs, but I would try to get near the 22 pound limit for F class if you plan on shooting the F class 2 day shoots.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

I would pick a different caliber for F-class. There are flatter shooting cartridges with a lot less recoil then a 338LM.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

ive never been recoil sensitive,my 3rd rifle was a model 70 in 300 win at 13,but i sure dont like being beat like a rented mule all day.I really dont think in the 25# range would be that bad,at one time i owned a sporter contour 700 in 300rum with no break that was just plain asinine.

+1, go 7WSM and dont look back. Near 338LM ballistics, for a fraction of the cost and recoil.

And with a brake....grin! Mine weighs 20lbs with an FTE brake and still pushes pretty good while shooting 300's.

Re: I'm takin the 338LM plunge

I have a SF can on my Surgeon 338. Its not that bad with the 250. With the 300s it gets a little more spicey.

However those fatheads at the NRA wont let me (or anybody) shoot a F-Class match with a can.
