Just got her back yesterday and mounted the scope. I tried to get it zeroed, today, but it was just too windy and setting the windage on this mount proved to be a PITA. I was pressed for time, but I got it close. I'm going to have to try again on a calm day and when I have more time.

Rifle is a mismatched/refinished '43 Oberndorf that proved to be a great shooter. Mount is from Accumounts, but I bought it from a friend. I added the low safety and had a friend of mine who is a gunsmith do the mount work. Scope is a post-war Hensoldt Dialytan 4x that I got on Ebay. Unfortunately, it was completely covered in rust, the lenses were filthy and the focus mechanism was frozen solid. I completely disassembled the scope and cleaned everything, re-greased it and reassembled. Runs like a top now and the glass is actually pretty nice.

I'll post a range report when I get it zeroed and wring her out.

Thanks for looking,

John

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

Looks really nice Joop. Where did you get it,or did you have the work done by a smith?

On the SSR zero, yes - they are a PITA. Two screw drivers and minimal movement required for big changes. Be prepared to use up a fair bit of ammo trying to get it bang on.

Don't forget to loosen off the screw under the front leg of the mount otherwise it is fairly easy to bend the tube to the point at which the turrets get sticky.....at least it was on my ZF39.

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

Thanks, gents.

BasraBoy,

The mount was installed by a good friend of mine who is a gunsmith. He's done a couple other projects for me, too. Anything that's too big or risky for me to tackle, I take to him.

Thanks again,

John

The Accumount M41b SSR base and mount have the windage cut straight across, so it is not adjustable for windage, only looks.
I hope yours is the semi circle cut that would make it usable. If not, you can always get a Weaver K4/M60b scope.;)

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

Yes,it's certainly adjustable. The problem I was having was over-adjusting it. It was difficult to impossible to hold the rifle perfectly still while doing it, just on a front rest/rear bag. Next time, I'll bring the vise along, too!

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

At first sight, this rifle was shooting great. However, I could only get 3-5 rounds out of it, before it starting throwing some very wide flyers and stringing vertically. After a lot of trial and error, I finally got it figured out. I thought I had the barrel floated well enough, but it was still close enough that when it got hot, it would make contact and start throwing flyers. It took a little more grinding on the rear of the bayonet lug and the front of the stock channel, combined with the right amount of attention to tightening the action screws (not to mention, over a hundred rounds of ammo and a lot of cussing!), but I finally got it!

The target below is a great example of what I was dealing with. This was from my last round of shooting, today. You can see the rounds that impacted high on the target, at the beginning of my session and how spread/strung out they are. Not once in this session did I adjust the scope, however. This was all done with floating the barrel and the tension on the screws. After shooting that spread and finally getting the barrel where I wanted it, I fired a group of the older (1953)M49 ammo at another target and it shot a group that was just under 2 inches. Nothing special, but consistent, shooting to zero and good for ammo of this vintage. The barrel was so hot at this point that I couldn't touch it. So, I switched back to the M75 ammo and fired five rounds at this bull, again. This time, four of them went into 7/8" and the fifth "flyer" brought it out to 1.5". I know it will shoot at least this well, cold bore, so I should be good to go.

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

Joop, looks like you're getting it sorted.

Just keep an eye on the SSR - I found mine would work loose after a twenty to thirty rounds until I tightened the thumbscrew right down with a set of molegrips.

It kind of defeats the QD concept of the mount but as I'm not planning to get overrun by the Red Army any time soon and shot on sight for having a scoped rifle and can still use the iron sights out to 300yds, I'm not too worried

So far, so good. I have at least a hundred rounds through it and everything is still tight. I'm in the habit of checking it before/during each session, though. However, if it should come off while I'm being assaulted by communists, I'm proficient with the irons to at least double the range you've suggested.

Thanks, guys.

Must be getting old!!

Re: K98 SSR Sniper Clone

Thanks again for all the input, guys.

I took the time today to set up some water jugs and a target at 300 yards, to get my elevation marked on the turret. I sighted in on the water jugs, then moved to the paper target (ignore the taped holes in the target. They were from my initial 100 yard work, last week). I only fired three shots, since I had only brought ten rounds with. I normally fire at least five shots, but this stuff is expensive, as well as hard to find and I'm trying to conserve it. I found that, when I put too much pressure on the forend, into the front rest, it will pull them wide to the right. I think I'm going to adopt the same SOP as with the M39 and M1A (and should do it with all of them, really) of not loading the forend with too much pressure, but pulling more from the wrist of the stock, backwards. That seems to work best.

Sight in on water jugs. I was aiming for the oval indentations on them:

Then, the paper target (8 inch black)

Thanks for following along.
