Mike, LC brass marked Match is not crimped, others including Special Ball were. As stated above, the knurled brass was to identify the ammunition that was not to be use in combat, due the the hollow point configuration (this was later changed as current OTM ammo is authorized) and they don't knurl the brass any longer.
To be honest unless you are shooting a gas gun, commercial brass is more consistent than LC, unless you do a lot of sorting. If you are using a gas gun, you are correct stay away from too many reloads on the knurled brass.
This was one of the advantages of shooting at Quantico when the USMC was still shooting the M-14, all the once fired 7.62 brass you could pick-up.
