Lasers?

Re: Lasers?

Lasers on handguns have a very limited application. To me the application is so limited I'd rather spend my money on ammo and training.

Lasers on rifles is a different story.

Re: Lasers?

I haven't tried the rechargable lasermax...because it's not as low profile as the Uni-Green. However. The Uni-Green eats batteries like nobodies business. I love it on my G34, but it's expensive to operate.

That said. It's the most low profile green laser I've found and I'm a huge fan.

I've never found them useful - I don't go kicking in doors, and a laser is worthless at 500 yards.

Even on my SBR, it's much faster to use an aimpoint.

I had a laser on my M&P pistol. After my first steel shooting match (in which I was the only person with a laser), I quickly learned why most active shooters don't use them. They are significantly slower than iron sights and do not increase accuracy. I replaced my CTC grips with tritium sights.

Re: Lasers?

+1 for Viridian. I have a buddy that just got a couple of these. I'm buying one from him this week for the nightstand 9. I have a cheap egay red laser on sawed off 12 guage pump w/ pistol grip for fun.

Re: Lasers?

I tried a laser once on my Glock at my local range; I found it very distracting. I found myself focusing specifically on the dot rather than the big picture; peripheral vision was gone which seems dangerous in a self-defense situation. I'll stick to my tritium sights.

I've never used one on my SBR, but like the responses above, get yourself an Aimpoint or Eotech and you'll be gtg.

Re: Lasers?

I am wrapping up a review of the Viridian C5L laser.

They have a narrow scope where they are valuable.

For skilled shooters they are slower than irons when shooting a pistol. It gets slower the longer out you go.

Lasers are intended for when you cannot get your eyes behind the sights. In military work, mainly for use with NVG's or as designators for other weapons systems (heavy machineguns, etc). In LE work, they are exceptional for working with a shield. You can keep your sidearm tucked and still aim. They have limited use as a show of force. Sometimes this works well, sometimes it doesn't work at all. (remember the rules of deadly force).

I have another higher power laser that I am experimenting with on a rifle. I will report back on that separately.

Most people put lasers on pistols because they think it will make them a better shot. It doesn't.

I also have a Surefire X400 here. Unfortunately it doesn't fit in any duty approved holster.

I get an uneasy feeling anytime I see that dot on or around me. Sorta serves as a last warning when you see it coming doesnt it?

Re: Lasers?

The wife and I have Crimson Trace on our M&Ps.. the do not change the grip of the weapon. We turn them off when we are at the range and turn them on when we carry.

My thought is, SHTF moment... very likely to point shoot and forget the practice put into the range.

I have a simple barska green on one of my AR's.. just for work to 25M.. the rest are EO's and 4x's...

Re: Lasers?

I like B.E. Meyers Lasers the best, although I am not sure how aval they are. I see one or two once in awhile on the for sale sections.

Anyhow: http://www.bemeyers.com/index.php?option=com_product&catid=1&id=3

I've gone 7/10 at 75 yds on a fox shape/size steel plate using a laser on my G34 with subs. Without it, I'm lucky to go 1/10.

In close, I agree. Speed and accuracy is not gained with a laser.

Re: Lasers?

The problem I found with most lasers for rifles is that they are hard to zero and will not hold a zero. I do use a Lasermax Uni Laser in red on my PS90 and it seems to work well.

Re: Lasers?

Lasers work great for home protection as it will help discourage a person from continuing when they see that red dot and makes aiming easier in the dark especially in the middle of the night being woken up abruptly. I agree it doesn't replace training.

Re: Lasers?

I set my laser Right on/ slightly below the iron sight so I dont see it when aiming down sight. If I was in a situation where I cant aim down I can use laser.

Other plus on laser is training tool. easy to see on draw if you are arcing or flipping, etc when bringing sights on target. Also if your pulling shots or slappn trigger its pretty obvious when seen with laser on target.

Very few that risk breaking into an occupied dwelling are unarmed and few care about your little dot. If they see your dot that means you have exposed yourself without firing. Not a good thing. If someone is in your house and you are justified in putting a laser on them (i.e. pointing a deadly weapon) then you are justified in dropping the hammer. Assuming that they will be discouraged by your show of force is foolhardy and puts you behind the power curve. LE and Mil work under slightly different rules. LEO's have many, many, many instances where they am justified in covering a suspect with a weapon, but not yet justified in firing.

Re: Lasers?

^^^ What he said!

In a home defense situation if you are justified in putting sights on-target you better have already pulled the trigger! As for lasers, I tried to convince myself otherwise and even played around with one but I just don't see the value for a non-Mil/LEO user.

Re: Lasers?

In my experience lasers are useful in the following three situations

1) Certain crowd control situations where they actually believe you will utilize whatever it's attached to, or pointing out an offender.
2) Aiming through night vision using an IR type laser or marking a target.
3) Aiming a pistol while carrying a ballistic shield. And in a team setting more then one visible laser is a disaster waiting to happen.

Barring you being in one of those situations it's just added weight or a crutch that will assist you in breaking your other leg as well. Quality training and ammo is the way to go.
