im thinking of building a light tactical hunting rifle.
this is my first build and i hope to get it right first time.
i want the weight of the rifle to be about 9 lbs W/O scope. i was thinking of building the rifle with switch barrels. in 280 Rem AI and 9.3x62 mauser
so a standard bolt face and long action. what custom action would you recomend and what stock? i have been looking at Lawton 7000 and Bat hunter repeater w. picatinny rail. And for the stock, Manners Mct or MCM A1-3. in the lightest versions.
regarding the action should i go for a CrMo or a SS?
and do seekins make bottom metal and mags for standard rounds?
i hope you can fill in the blanks.

Re: light tactical hunter. build

My favorite general purpose stock, on which I have built my favorite walking varminter is the McMillan Sako Varminter. It can be inlet for other actions besides Sako of your choice. It has a slight beavertail to the fore end, a slim wrist and in my case, was ordered with a shorter LOP to make up for wearing a heavy jacket. IMO it's the best general purpose design out there and I prefer it to the M40 pattern.

Alek,
First off. Welcome aboard.
As for the MCM stocks. You can always go with EDGE. I think its done with graphite instead of fiberglass. Makes it alot lighter in weight.
As for the action. You, being in Europe i'm thinking its gonna get wet. I would suggest going with a stainless action then duracoat it. For a hunting rig i wouldn't want any bare stainless. Might spook the game.

I hope this helped a little.

+1 on the sako stock. Here's a pic of mine (I know, gratutious pic post) Rifle is actually a sako but, as mentioned, they can inlet for lots of actions on this stock. Rifle is a sako varminter, full steel trigger guard, leupold MK IV scope and stock has McMillan's "max fill" so its about as heavy as such a rig could get. But, the way the stock handles, it balances very nicely and i have carried this rifle all day without problems. A lighter fill, scope and/or barrel and it would be very light....

Re: light tactical hunter. build

I live near McMillan, so it was natural to use them for the stock. I chose an Edge-fill A1-3 with a Surgeon RSR action and their new aluminum pinned scope rail. Chose a Krieger barrel with a Light Palma #16 contour. The stock (w/ Limbsaver pad) weighs in at 27 oz. The Light Palma barrel weighs in at 3.7 lbs. Using PT&G BDL bottom metal. My estimate for weight without scope & rings is 7 3/4 lbs. Getting ready to drop all the pieces off at the gunsmith for assembly.

This is intended to be a hunting rifle for my wife and 13 yr old. So the emphasis is on light and tacti-cool. :)

PS. This will be a 243 WIN / 308 WIN switch barrel rifle.
PPS. I fondled the Sako stock at McM and that would be a great hunting stock also.
