I want to get a very reliable semi auto. Not looking for one with too many bells, whistles nor necessarily good looks. Prefer something that is a reasonable shooter, low maintenance, easy to find replacement parts and accurate to hit large targets within 100 yards with my aging eyes. Any suggestions besides an AK? Don't need the prettiest girl at the prom, just one that can dance!

Thanks for your advice

18.0" M1A barreled action massaged by SEI with USGI and SEI parts/services.
Use a tight fitting USGI synthetic stock with the M8 from UltiMAK.
Put an low riding Aimpoint on the M8 and start shooting. No cheek riser needed.

You may want to have the forearm of the stock stiffened.

Not my rifle.

Re: Looking for a reliable semi auto

man that is a nice m1a , i love the sight setup you got.

I would reccomend you get yourself an AR , doesnt matter which one.

sks isnt a bad choice either. The gas pistons kind of suck though , usually if you replace those with a new one you wont have any problems with an sks either.

but i'd go with the AR , they are accurate , easy to shoot, stuff like that. Lots of options in barrel length. Lots of choices.

Basic Colt 6940. I have one, can get them for about 1200-1300 if you look around. I have ran every type of ammo through it you can imagine. Never had any issues and they will put them in the black on a man sized target out to 600 yards. That includes the 3 dollar a box russian ammo. Shoot a lot for cheap imo.

Budget?
Caliber?

I would suggest a decent AR15. RRA or Bushmaster for around 900.00.. or build your own. you might not save money but it's more spread out over time plus it's fun as hell to build. Not like building any other rifle. Building an AR is like putting together a kit. Honestly, the whole assembly should be just a couple hours if you havent done it before.

Here is one I did. I just mimicked the design for an M&P (couldn't find any at the time) same rails, M&P lower, JP Trigger, Magpul stock, Thompson barrel, Magpul grip, Troy sights, standard gas tube, RRA LPK,

100 yards isn't very far. A 6 MOA gun will get the job done at that range for bad guys.

Ever think of a CMP M1 Garand? They're $495 or $595 depending upon the grade. They hold 8 rounds of full-power 30-06. And they have the best iron sights ever devised. Little overkill for home defense but they'll work great killing anything up to the size of a Bull Elk and they're capable out as far as you can see to shoot with em. Plus they're legal everywhere and clips are $2 rather than $8 to $25 you'll pay for AR/FAL/M1A mags. A final benefit is that you can have them shipped direct to your door with no FFL middleman and CMP sells surplus ammo for them for $0.55/round. for details: http://www.thecmp.org/

For a 100 yards and less gun where reliablility is paramount and you are on a budget, it's hard to beat an AK, SKS, or a very basic AR. They'll all run well. SKS can be had for $300. AK for about $400. AR's starting around $700.

If you need to put a red dot on it, the AR will be by far the easiest.

All my normal battle rifle suggestions are too pricey when you only need 100 yards. FALs are around $900 these days. M1As are around $1500.

That one is not mine, but this one is... I prefer the Aimpoint over the Scout scope pictured.

I like the Saiga platform.

It combines the AK system with a more hunter friendly/less intimidating overall image.

Nominally available in a goodly number of chamberings; unfortunately many of them here in the USA seem indistinguishable from Vaporware.

VZ 58 gets my vote. These days they run under 500 bucks, have a MUCH better trigger than an AK, far more accurate than the Saiga line which can be very poor on accuracy, and easy to disassemble.

Ever thought about the SU-16 series from Kel Tec? Thinking about one as a home defense gun, heard nothing but good stuffabout them.
