Well, I'm new here and to long range shooting in general. I got into LR shooting because of a close friend. Long story short I'v had my savage FCP-K for only about a month now and I absolutely love it. I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24ffp scope on it. I am running an old cheap bipod and a sandbag in the rear until my XLR chassis and Atlas bipod show up.
About 2 weeks ago I got it sighted in for 200yds, and just this last weekend took it shooting at hit my first target at 800 yds.
However, yesterday (Monday)me and my friend went out shooting at a local river bottom and set one of the steel targets out at 500 yrds. The result was rather unbelievable, and I am giving the credit to the gun not to myself. Just thought you guys would like to see it. Was using stock 150gr PMC ammo from the local dealer and had about a 10mph wind at my back.
Here is a view of the target with some of my hits from the .308, and the smaller ones from my friends .223.

And if you look close enough there are three small bullet points of impact all located in the center circle.

I fired all three and it seemed to both myself and my friend that they all landed in the small spot when we were watching through the scopes. However, on closer inspection I was shocked that they all landed that close to one another. The target is only 9.5 inches wide. I have no idea what MOA that would be at that range, but it was good enough for me.
The other hits were me aiming at different parts, or just using the wrong shooting technique and making a couple of zingers. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy.

Re: Love my Savage

I love my savage as well, my family has been hunting for years and my savage took the longest distance kill my family has ever done, 930 yards, one shot and the deer dropped instantly, hit it right in the sweet spot. This was a factory Savage model 16 in 300 WSM with an old vari-x II 6-24 scope, and using Hornady factory 165gr. ammunition (which I think was discontinued after Hornady's deal with ruger). Needless to say, I loved this rifle so much after my first hunting season with it that I decided to customize it, which I've never done before. This rifle single-handedly got me into target shooting.

Great shooting! I'm a big Savage fan, too.

My only question is; Did you intend to draw that smiley face on the target? Of course you did!

Re: Love my Savage

I just finished my savage build and now time to get out and do some shooting. I like your comment about how it must be the gun and not you, well truth be told even the best gun in the world does nothing good unless its in the hands of the right person driving it. Good shooting!

Re: Love my Savage

My Savage 10FP has been a great rifle. Out of the box, it would hold MOA or slightly less with 150gr Federal Powershok ammo, all the way out to 600 yards (never tried further). My rifle has over 5000 rounds through at this point, and it's only getting better. I was just inspecting it last night, and noticed the serial number on the bolt is starting to wear pretty thin.

Here is a 10 shot group at 600 yards. The outside edge of the 10 ring measures 5". Notice the two shots stacked at 7 o'clock. Those were consecutive shots, and the second one exploded the wooden peg my spotter was on.
