Hi guys and gals! I'm new to this site and long range shooting. For about a year I've been playing around with an AR15 that I own to about 400yds. At the same time I have been upgrading a LR308 (24" heavy barrel) that I've had for about six months. the LR is still in the break-in phase as I have only put 31rds down range with it. I've snaked and lubed the barrel after every round and plan on doing so until I hit 40rds, then I will do every 5rds until I hit a total of 60. This gun now has the following upgrades; PRS stock, Giessele match/adj. trigger, ergo grip,Magpu AFG grip, Harris swivel bipod, Troy TRX 12 handguard, American Defense 20MOA mount and a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 scope. Looking to get this gun out to 1000yds some day but let me know what you guys think. I'm having trouble adding a pic, I'll keep trying.. Thanks!

There is no real proof that says breaking in a barrel will enhance your accuracy more than just shooting it and cleaning in a normal pattern. I have done that on a couple of rifles and also not done it on several rifles and I can't tell you that I ever saw any distinctive difference in performance.

So should I just run rds thru it from this point on how I normally would? I plan on burning about 40-60 next time around. Another thing is the scope, it hasn't been to the range yet, now my concern is that it may be sitting too high. Don't know the exact height, haven't measured that but by looking at it, its just a bit higher than what I expected. Hope that doesn't affect accuracy, I'll be sighting it in then running it to the 300yd line, she how she runs! BTW, thanks again BB!

kinda hard to tell, its whats ok for you. thats why you have that adjustable cheek rest on the prs
THIS will help alot, it will bring it down 1/4 of a inch. i put one om mine its just their trap door with forward assist, you can sell your upper receiver for about 80-90.00 shipped on here

I've got plenty of adjustment on the stock just concerned about accuracy, especially at long ranges which is what its intended for. I'm not very familiar with long range and always hear about sitting your scope close to the barrel and how that contributes to accuracy.

You may have a hard time getting to 1k with the Conquest optic. The reason is it has limited elevation travel; around 46 MOA from bottom to top prior to zero. Once you zero it on an AR I bet you will use quite a bit of that elevation. So, with the ADM mount you have 66 MOA of travel and you will have to see what you have left after zero by running the scope to the top and see what you have left over. With a 24" barrel I would speculate that you will need 38-40MOA of elevation from a 100 yard zero to get to 1K. You can test it at home to see how much you have left after you zero the optic and it wil give you your answer.

Nice LR-308 hern460! That troy hand-guard is a nice touch. Do you find that you use the Magpul angled grip on that?

If you have trouble reaching out far get a Badger 22 MOA rail (run them on both my uppers) - I had issues with the metal mags not feeding great so i went with the Magpuls, cleared up feeding problems.
And like above, just start shooting normal. I'm nice to the barrel for 20-30 rounds.

I've got the Z1000 reticle and have been on the Zeiss calculator punching in numbers trying to figure out what might work for me based on their results. I currently have some 150gr PowerShok to play with. We'll see how that does up to 300yds then maybe go with a heavier grain later and center at 500yds.

Thanks lash! The grip I don't use much, it all depends on how my body position. Most of the time when shooting my .223 I grip the rear stock with my non shooting hand but when it gets windy I go forward for more stability and the Magpul grip just feels more natural to me due to the angle.

I asked about the angled Magpul grip since I have one on my SKS, but that is a light arm and I hold it differently due to it's different use. I like the angled foregrip a lot for that use, but just hadn't yet seen one on a heavier LR rifle.
