Hey guys just checking to see what you all use for the best loads for you M1's. I picked up some varget (for 06, 308, and mauser) and checked the books, they mostly give bullet weight for the M1 but say very little on powder. Just looking for opinions, go light and have a bolt action m1, or go heavy and feel the rounds?

Re: M1 Garand Load

What COAL are you guys loading to for your Garands? Crimp or no crimp?

Re: M1 Garand Load

I use Varget per the Lastest Hornady loading Manual.

Here, basically word for word, is load info as it appears in "The Complete M1 Garand" by Jim Thompson.

H 335---43.1gr__________WW 748---46.8gr

*Special accuracy load from Sierra. Calculated in MUP Brass
**Loaded in military brass, very clean load.
***Reduced velocity, good accuracy.

General Notes: This load chart is very conserative, but as ALWAYS, the info here was not calculated using your rifle and barrel.
All loads wroked up using Federal 210Gm primers.

I hope this helps. I know I'm gonna try several of these loads when I get my Garand in!

This is one of the best loads I've come across, as well (but I use the BTHP Match bullet).

It will vary, from one rifle to the next. The load mentioned above I happen to have seated to 3.315" for my rifle. As for the crimp, I've tried it both ways and don't note any difference. Some say that it's required to help prevent any setback of the bullet. A friend of mine, who has shot Garands for 30+ years, told me that he never crimps and has never had any issues. If you have the proper case neck tension, it shouldn't be an issue.

Re: M1 Garand Load

I use 46.5 grs of VARGET behind a 168 gr A-Max, COAL 3.270" to duplicate the Hornady Match load. Dave Emary of Hornady posted the data on the CMP forums. This is a very accurate load in both my Garands and 1903s.

Re: M1 Garand Load

Call me crazy, but i load 41 grains of varget with a 150 grain projectile, and get good groups. Then again, im not shooting farther than 300 right now, so the reduced velocity is not a problem.

Re: M1 Garand Load

I should add the 47gr IMR4895 168gr Amax load was 2 clicks low using the 1,000 yard mark on the elevation adjustment. I thought that was pretty damn close. It was cold as could be when I shot it too so It may be closer on a nicer day.
