Hey guys, I don't know if this has been on here before, but I ran across it just now and thought I'd throw it up here. I'm not sure if it'll ever happen other than in my dreams, but it's worth a signature if you ask me

Re: M14 petition

Signed! I would prefer that M-14s be refurbished and put back into service, but if not this sounds like an excellent idea.

Re: M14 petition

This has been going around for years and will likely never happen....why ? The M14 is classified as a machine gun and would take an act of congress to change so don't hold your breath.

Re: M14 petition

Once a MG, always an MG.

It'll never happen.

For one thing it would invite to much scrutiny of BATFE's record keeping.

Good luck

Re: M14 petition

Did anyone else read this at the bottom of the petition?

"The author is a major in the U. S. Army. He is an aeronautical engineer and is currently enrolled in the U. S. Navy Test Pilot School. He is also a specialist in the research and development field. He saw combat in Vietnam as an airborne infantryman and as an aviator."

Does that seem fishy to anyone else? Both a grunt and a pilot in the same conflict... that happened 40 years ago. And now he's in the Navy Test Pilot School? Hmmmm.... methinks something is up.

Re: M14 petition

If he was an officer, that might not be so fishy. He could have commanded a platoon on the ground in one tour, and served as a pilot in another years later.

Either way, I signed the petition. I think all of the M14s should be removed from service and replaced with AR style 7.62 rifles for longer range use. The M14 is a relic and should be surplussed off.

Considering our government is broke, this is unlikely. In that case, they should keep the best ones in service and retire the rougher ones to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Re: M14 petition

The article mentioned is almost 30 years old.

It was written by Michael V. Stratton, LTC retired

Here is a link to some info on LTC Stratton, FWIW.

BTW, the M14 issue has been on the radar for a lot of people since about 1980 and it will never happen. Once manufactured originally as a Machine Gun it can never be converted to a "legal" non MG.

It is even illegal to demil the receivers into parts and put them back together. Hahn used to do it and so did a guy in SC, I believe. The SC guns were seized by the BATF from the buyers after being sold on 4473's to legitimate buyers.
