M40 New Manufacture Stock

The main area that needs sanding down a bit is the fore end on the Beever stocks, but they're the closest stock out there that I've seen since Taylor Precision isn't around anymore.
I was happy for the additional beef. My barrel is girthier than Varmint and there was room to fit it.

Mine has too much belly but was fine for my build.

The slope of the belly from front action screw to tip of stock needs to be a bit sharper.

Thank you sir, that's a better way of putting it for sure! I kept wanting to say more taper was needed but that kinda sounded like it could be taken as the width of the forend vs the depth 🤦🏻‍♂️

That is a good question!
The standard Remington metal plate is too small for my Beever and my stock would have to be whittled down to fit. I am thinking of ordering the 1/2” as pmclaine has done. It comes in three sizes.
I even found a matching S&B scope on eBay NIB.
His is the nicest ‘Tribute’ rifle I have seen!!!-Richard

I checked my 16601 buttplates against the extensive data given by @USMCSGT0331 in another thread. Long story short, all four of these fall within the SD of the Mean. ( I think that means they are within the acceptable tolerance 😂) I’m not a reloader or machinist.

None is a direct bolt on to the Beever stocks I have. But I can play with the position and find the best spot, then I can work the wood down to the aluminum.

Merry Christmas,
Greg

My two wood stock guys are unavailable these days (one has severe back issues and an appt with a neurosurgeon, and the other is building his retirement home and doesn’t have his shop set-up yet). I need to find a woodworking expert who can sand/contour a Beaver156 (eBay) stock down to proper dimensions, fit buttplate, and refinish with a nice military style reddish/brown oil-based stain. I don’t have the right experience to do it correctly, but was curious if anyone has recommendations from someone who is a quasi-professional re stock work. Here’s my Mawhinney stock for comparison:

Looks like my Beaver156 stock will be bedded to the action this winter. Just wish I knew how to expertly contour the forend so it’s more of the skinny profile of the original M40 stocks.

Vintage 40-X repeater donor action already factory clip-slotted. The currently mounted heavy SS 40-X, 27.5” barrel will be cut down to 24” and used on another M700 receiver.

Bartlein ‘Remington Varmint’ profile blank with 1/10 twist, 5R rifling. Muzzle diameter at 24” should be +/- 0.830”, similar to the originals.

…this will be my M40 “shooter” for CMP’s new Category B vintage sniper rifle matches.

What scope are you going to mount on it?
Not sure, but I suspect a cheap 3-9x40mm with 1/4 click adjustments and Duplex reticle. I have only one of the green anodized Leupold M40 commemorative scopes which I have on my Chuck Mawahinny rifle (w/ Mil-Dot reticle), and will keep that scope on that rifle. I would like something green, but with positive 1/4" click adjustable turrets - but to my knowledge, no such commercial scope exists at the moment.

Im pretty sure I remember @USMCSGT0331 posted up measurements somewhere here in Vintage.

Yes, he sure did. As seen in post #66, I have a correct M40 stock off a Chuck Mawhinney M40 rifle, but here's what I don't have:
1. An indoor woodworking area where I can create a massive level saw dust - as about 1/4 of wood has to removed from the sides and belly of forend. (We have several inches of snow on the ground and more coming, so outdoors ain't going to work for me).
2. I don't have a belt sander or other mechanized woodworking devices to flatly sand away that level of wood. (I have mainly saws, chisels, etc).
3. I don't have the wood refinishing experience to give it a vintage military finish...but I envy those who do.
4. Lastly, I had major surgery 2 weeks ago and my strength/mobility is limited for another month or so.

...so that said, hoping to find a wood working guru this winter, but my other go-to guys aren't available.

My wood guru down in GA did this nice M40 replica for himself. He's got the skills, but he's building his retirement home and doesn't have a shop right now to resume this kind of work...but this is my goal.

I wish Redfield (Leupold) would make another run of those green M40 scopes again!

I saw it asked previously but I was wondering if anyone has determined which model aluminum butt plate fits these the best?

I came across a December 1963 BDL Varmint 243 that appears to have been shot very little (probably a box or two) that someone put in a ugly knoxx stock and put a BSA on it for an absolute steal. It’s close enough for me for a faux M40 and I’ll have about $300 into the barreled action with tombstone trigger, and bottom metal by time I eBay the stock and scope.

The 16601 buttplate is correct for a M40. The ones you will find have raw aluminum edges as they were mounted on the stock, then the stock and buttplate were sanded to final shape as a unit. The M40 had the buttplates re-anodized after this was done to hide the raw edges. The buttplates are fairly easy to find, there always seems to be a few on EBay some at crazy prices but you should be able to find one for $30-40 dollars.

Is there another source for a M40 repro stock?

I finally received my stock from the beever guy after USPS basically lost it for a week and this thing is a total piece of shit and not even close to being inletted correctly. The bottom metal inlet is about 1/8” or less too shallow at the front which would be fairly easy to correct and the inletting in the barrel channel is horrendous which can also be corrected, but the action inlet is about 1/4” too high which dropping it down would mess up everything else and the entire top side of the stock would have to be reworked and it would all end up way off and not right. So it’s not even fixable even if I wanted to fully reinlet the stock.

I’d like to do an M40 inspired rifle with this barreled action but after going through the delays with USPS and then finally receiving a turd I don’t think I want to take a second chance with one from this seller.

The main dude at vintagegunscopes is a pretty friendly guy. I spoke with him at length on the phone and he was really helpful. I'm wondering if enough of us approached him, would he let us send our scopes in, and during his refurb send us the stripped tube and other parts back so we can source our own anno/cerakoting, then ship them back to him for the reassembly. I know the other 2 scope refinshers wont do it, but I've never approached this guy about that. Could be worth a shot. That way we'd have a colored scope, and have it rebuilt by a professional. (could sneak in a mil dot in there as well I bet)
