Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

First... read 'em and weep. Second... I apologize for the excellent shooting conditions today. I guess God is making up for my horrendous conditions in February. It was sunny and 75 degrees at the range, which I have determined is the best conditions for my gun / ammo combo. Winds were steady at 5 mph coming from the 10 to 11 o'clock position. I needed about .1 - .2 mils of hold-off at 100 and .2 - .4 mils at 200... just perfect.

Here you go:
Name: Carter Mayfield
Class: Scope
Rifle: Remington 40X Custom
Caliber: .22LR
Ammo: Eley Match
Match: 100YP-TQ4
Score: 250-17X

Name: Carter Mayfield
Class: Scope
Rifle: Remington 40X Custom
Caliber: .22LR
Ammo: Eley Match
Match: 200YP-A21
Score: 244-8X

Looking back at the old records, I did not set any personal bests, but I have never had a better day of shooting as both of these scores come close to tying my personal best.

The Targets:

200 Yards

Sorry if I seem bragadocious, I am just really pumped because my numbers haven't been this good in a long while and I was starting to think maybe there was something wrong with me or the gun. It looks like conditions are primarily to blame, so I am pretty jazzed. I'M BACK, BABY!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

^ NICE! I'll be out next week. That's gonna be one damn tough act to follow boys!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

It has been a rough few weeks.
I'll just be happy to get out and put some holes in paper.
Very nice Carter!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

Mighty fine shooting, Carter!

Hopefully as we head towards the end of March our weather here will get better and I can send some lead down range. Wednesday's not looking to bad.

Again, very nice shooting!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

TP, looking at your 100 yard target, I think your score should be higher. Admittedly, it is tough, because there are a bunch of shots on top of each other, but I count 5 - 7 out of the 10 ring, which makes the score somewhere between 243 and 245. You know that all you need to do is pierce the ring to get the score, right?

There seems to be one marginal shot at about 4 o'clock and then I can't count how many shots there are in that hole outside of the 10 at 3 o'clock. Looks to be between one and three shots.

I might move to one target for my 200 yarders, but the shots on to of each other makes the 100 yard targets hard to score with just one target. Going from 3 to 2, the 100 yard is still al ittle tough for me. I have lost shots and then you find yourself in a pickle figuring out which two shots were a one-holer. The way I count, I count how many are out of the 10-ring for score (and 9-ring for 200 yards), and how many are out of the X ring to count Xes. The problem with that method is that while it is easier, if I get a 2-in-1 in the 9 ring and don't see it, it will turn into a 10 and an "X."

I am sure I have artificially inflated a score or two because of my method. The best way to get it to work is to have as few shots per target as possible. Of course, they yell at me at the range for putting up 3 targets at the 200, because they pretty much take up the whole target area... so there are other considerations there. I was happy to go to 2 targets, but now I have to figure out which target gets 12 and which gets 13.

Or you could shoot my model five; it scatters the shots just enough to avoid the multi-shot X-count.

But hey, I only need one target!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

Well it's been a while since I've posted up some scores and now I see the rules have changed, oops. We are now shooting 25 shots at gongs and targets, correct? Not a big deal, I shot a 296-11x TQ4 prone and my gong size is unofficial. Guess I better pay closer attention, my bad.

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

first, it's nice to see you back. we're doing a more optional 2.5" or 3.5" at 100, and a 5"x7" or 5" at 200, and 25 rounds for ammo conservation and better evens out to using a 50 round if doing 2 comps, (1 box of ammo rather than having "left overs").

Thanks to all that participated this month, and your input in the learnings thread.

We picked up a new shooter, a big welcome to THE HOFF.

CARTER MAYFIELD is still the man with a .22, and SMALLBORESNIPER is the man with the .17

Seemed as the weather is improving so are the scores. I'm sure as the weather continues to improve, the participation will be up also.

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

The X count is for tie breaking.
You beat me fairly.
Congratulations!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

It is funny. The weather has been mostly highly windy here, but with a few days of low wind, I go out and really clean up. I really think 70 - 90 degrees is a sweet spot for my gun / ammo combo temp-wise. Whether I am shooting groups, practicing, or shooting for score, everything seems to tighten up in these conditions. I have heard that Lapua ammo is good for low temps. Man,is it expensive, but if it gets up my scores in the winter, it might be worth it... and no cracking wise, yes, my scores are lower in the winter.

And TP, you owe me a beer for beating clodhopper. I was the one who pointed out your math mistake!

Re: MARCH 2010 SH 100 TO 300 YD RIMFIRE COMPETITION

A nice ice cold beer woud be all right after a 90 degree trip to the range!
My last trip to the range, after shooting I peeled off my insulated bibs, two hooded sweatshirts, turned the car heater all the way up and drank hot coffee.
Wasn't all that cold about 38 degrees but that good ole fresh air was comming at me all day long from the west about 10-15 mph
with little sunshine.
