after serving 8 years in the navy I am now considering going army.job's available for prior service are...11c indirect infantryman, 15e unmanned aircraft systems repair, 25q multichannel transmission systems, 25r visual information equipment, 35p cryptologic, 68x mental health, 74d chemical.....what one is best ? this is my first post

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

Well the 15E course is good (I instruct it). UAVs are the way of the future -enter Howard Hughes voice-. I dont know anything about the other MOS's. I will say this though the army course is much better when the Marines are teaching it.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

Which one is the best is kind of a opinion dont you think?

If you said which one is the best to be around women id say 68x.

Or which is the best to get stud schools id say 11c (11b would be better but not an option for you, which i find odd)

Point being that if you ask which is the best, all you will get in feedback is opinions. Put some grading conditions in you question.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

I'd go 15e, USAF touaght me aircraft maint, what wrong with the Navy, what is your job, why after 8 years are you considering the Army, I bet the samethings that make you unhappy in the Navy(except sea duty) will be the same in the Army, welcome to Snipershide.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

427- A lot of guys are going Blue to Green because they can't no matter how hard to work or stay in get promoted.

I know a Scout in A-stan right now that was an E-5 (wtf ever the Navy calls it) and in his job he would never get past paygrade E-5 in the Navy. He came in the Army as a SGT (E-5) and since he is serious about being successful has caught himself up on the true level of skill and knowledge he should have for his rank. He will likely make SSG (E-6) within a year. His CSM loves him, his 1SG loves him, his Squadron Commander loves him. If he goes before the board and doesn't totally botch it, he will be an E-6 before he ever would have in the Navy and doing it in a job that he truly loves versus whatever got thrown his way.

To the OP- what do YOU want out of the MOS? Fun for the rest of 20 and then you'll work at the USPS? or get a few more years in and then bail to do the same thing as a civilian working for the Army and making bank?

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

I have know Sailors that have gone to the Army and they all are for the most part doing ok and seam to like it. I also know ALOT of Sailors that like being in the Navy and would not change it. As for the promotion issue Cavscout that is kinda of BS. It ALL depends on your Rate/MOS "Choose your Rate Choose your Fate" I came into the Navy in 2001 as a E-3 and I am now a E-6 waiting on the Cief results (due tomorrow, probably before you read this). I have done very well for myself here in the Navy. I was in the Marine Corps before I was in the Navy and I did 4yrs there as an 0311 and made it to Cpl before I got out. All the services are what YOU make of it. I love being a Marine and I love the Navy, I have no hate for the Army or the Chairforce. Go where you want to go and serve your country with pride.

As for the origanl question I am thinking 15E. I am in Aviation and I would want to work on unmanned aircraft.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

He stated specifically that one of the reasons he switched was there was essentially a glass ceiling for promotion compared to the Army. I've known a few guys who got out of the Navy and then went Army and they said it was basically a dead end compared to the Army. 1 was a Seabee and the other was a Operations Specialist.

However, the Army, because of a few factors is now maxing out promo points. They've been at 798 for a while now for 19D. That's pretty high. I lucked out and made my cut off at 450ish. To max points is damn near impossible unless you have college or are in one of the Special Operations type units.

So, I guess the lesson for the jocks and lazies is this: The military as a long term successful career is still going to necessitate college. Go now, enlist later. If you must enlist now, give up the partying for college courses. You might miss out for a year or two, but you will make rank before your peers.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

i'd go 35 series if i had it to do all over again, ok maybe not but 35 series guys is all about the TS clearence, you can get out and make buco bucks having a TS, it costs something like 10K for a company to get one of their intel guys that clearence. Plus there will always be the need for peeps in the intel world

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

Wait a minute...you can actually get promoted in the Army now? That was not the case when I was in, there was literally a freeze. Iwas stuck at E4 forever, the most they could do to award good performance was give you stripes and call you copral.

I hope it lasts, but I fear it won't. With wars and conflicts winding down, so will the advancment oportunities.

As to the original qeustion, I would vote for 11 series. There is a tremendous source of pride being a grunt! I bet if you pushed hard enough you could even get a Bravo slot. It all depends on what you are looking for though.

I was literally offered any open MOS when I enlisted. To repeat what I was told...if you want to do the hooah, hooah high speed stuff, you need to go 11 series...I did.

I caught a lot of shit over it over the years (why didn't you do...etc.) but I am still glad I chose to be a lowly grunt.

+1, I never considered 19D to be anything other than a different version of Infantry with a little different take on things.

The world was my oyster when I enlisted. Station of Choice, Airborne, large bonuses etc with a lot of nice MOS choices were thrown at me.

Between the ASVAB Scores and no issues on the physical the guidance counselor kept pushing the computer jobs. Couldn't believe I wanted to "just" be a Scout. Then again, he chose to be a glorified admin puke, so, our ways of thinking were obviously clashing.

I always look back and think "man, I could have been EOD, or Psyops, or anything..." but in the end, I am glad I went the route I did. I made some lifelong friends, had some interesting experiences, and knew that combat arms was not the end all be all but rather a springboard to showing you what you are truly made of. Everything else is just working toward a goal.

When you choose a combat arms MOS, especially Infantry, Scout, and Forward Observer you are saying you are willing to get close to the enemy and destroy him. The support guys can ramble on about how they are willing to do that, but the fact remains- they didn't choose to do so.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

To the OP, after 8 years in the military, you should have an idea now what you like and what you don't like. Those jobs are so damn different from one another that there's got to be a few there you've got no desire to get into. UAV mechanic is going to be a growth industry, but you have to decide what you want to be doing.

I started out as an 11B. It's a great way to learn how the Army works. I know a dude who came in the Army from the Navy through the 18X program. He got 11B, airborne, and SF selection automatically. I'm also pretty sure recruiters are supposed to push those contracts because if you don't make SF, they have another grunt they can put into a line unit pretty fast.

Finally, if you're really thinking about going as a 35 series, I've got friends with over a decade in that are E5 waiting for points to drop for E6. The 35 series has higher promotion points than many of the other MOSs. Just a heads up.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

To the OP: I can't even begin to answer your question as you have not given us an inkling as far as what you like to do or what you want from the Army. I will share with you however the same wisdom I gave to one of my old recruit's wives when she called me a few days ago about selecting an MOS: pick a job you want to do for the next several years. Don't pick based on bonuses or anything else as that stuff suddenly wont make you feel better when you are hating life for 4-6 years.

11B- awesome job. All the real men do it
wink.gif
I've never heard of anyone coming in already with an 11C contract, but things change and it has been a few years since I was on recruiting duty.

I would say to maybe wait until October when the jobs open up for the new fiscal year but you already have a lot of good choices. That is surprising as most prior service guys usually get pretty hosed when they try to come back in.

Good luck and PM me if I can answer any other questions.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

Thank's for the reply...I decided to go 11b infantryman and try to go airborne, if I can't get my wings hopefully I can get attached to 3rd infantry or the BIG RED ONE

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

If I could go back....I'd go 11 series for my first go round, then re-class after my initial enlistment.

Knowing what I know about the Army and opportunities afforded for specific groups......

Go either the 11 series MOS if you want an exciting couple of years, with opportunities to go to difference schools. Or go the 15E, since unmanned vehicles seem to the be the way of the future.

ETA: Just saw your post.....good choice my man!

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

M.holly congrats on the career choice. I couldn't imagine doing anything else except being an 11B. When I recently re upd I thought about reclassing but couldn't imagine doing anything else. Learn to embrace the suck cause someone will always be sucking worse. I don't know what pay grade you'll be coming in as but I'd recommend picking up the common tasks skill level one and two books and the Ranger hand book because depending on your rank you may have privates under you with combat experience. Enjoy Benning as I
Guess that's where you'll be headed first.

Welcome to the brotherhood.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

Congrats, a fine choice.

As rdgshooter said, you will need to go ahead and start getting up to speed on the technical proficiency aspects.

If you have any grunts around your area that you know, have em start showing you patrolling techniques and such.

Get in shape if you aren't already.

Re: MILITARY CAREER QUESTION

I along with all the other 11 bangers are proud of you to choose a real job, after 13 years of it i cant hear shit and my back is fucked but ya gotta do what ya love doing
