This is a painting depicting a horrible moment in The Battle of Britain. The building these firefighters were trying to put out was in the book printing and publishing section of London, specifically targeted by the Luftwaffe because it had masses of combustible materials in old warehouses. The artist witnessed this scene and captured it later on canvas. IMHO, one of the most moving images from WW2.
