No need for shelves. 50 and 30 cal cans stack very well all on their own and less wasted space.
They do... but when you get them 8 high and realize that the can you want today as you are loading up for the range is always on the bottom... it is a pita!!! And the can you want IS always on the bottom!!!

Not sure how this happens but it sure seems to work out that way. But it never hurts to have the ammo can up off of the floor, shelf or not.
