It sounds trite to repeat this but a lifetime behind bars would be a living hell for someone that was really guilty.

I think it would be exponentially worse for an innocent person. I would rather be executed immediately than spend years hoping someone recognizes my innocence. If you spend more than a few years behind bars, your life is altered forever...and not in a good way. Friends and some family will have moved on; some will always think of you as guilty. Any carrer you had came to a screeching halt and most likely will never be revived. I remember returning stateside after five years absence. Took me a while to adjust. I cannot imagine re-entering the "world" after 20 or more years.
