My new Savage .300win - question

Hey all,

Got a new project gun today. Picked it up for a steal - looks like it's hardly been shot. I know this isn't the best thing around but it'll be a fun project to get into LR shooting a bit more. So this is a Savage model III in .300 win mag.

<span style="font-weight: bold">First question</span>: I've been looking at the Choate stocks but ran into a question. This gun has the detachable 3 round magazine - the stocks I'm looking at says it's a "blind magazine" ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=623067 ) - what does that mean? Can I use this gun with the magazine in this stock?

Thanks in advance and here are some pics. I put one of my Zeiss scopes on it, I figure it will be good out past 300 yards.

You can beat up on Savage rifles for several things, but the barrels are usually not one of them. Leave the barrel alone, put your money towards ammo or reloading components.

That has some serious potential. The Choate stock would work with some modifying but you would lose your detachable box mag. You can now get a McMillan A-5 for the long acton dbm. I think stockade also will make a stock for you. Savage barrels are pretty decent but if you want to change it Jim Biggs @ Northland Shooters supply has McGowen and Shilen barrels he has a Shillen in stock now his

Wow, those Shilen barrels are not too expensive at all. I'm putting that on my build list for when I shoot out the existing one. Thanks! ( http://www.shilen.com/pricesRifleBarrels.html )

<span style="font-weight: bold">Question 3:</span> triggers - the stock one is a bit strong. I'd guess it's set to 4-5lbs. I want it around 1.5-2lbs. Which of the following, or other recommendations, is going to be a better drop in replacement:

Good to know - I do plan to leave the barrel alone until it's shot out. I've got a good stockpile of factory loads already but I am interested in reloading. I've been saving all of my brass in .223 - so I figure I'll start learning reloading skills with that caliber and then go to my other rifles in .270 and .300

I've seen some decently priced 'starter' kits for reloading at cabelas and other places but I know they contain sub-par parts since it's a starter kit. I only want to buy this stuff once, so any links or models of the required parts would be great to hear. I'm sure there are some good threads about this but the search only pulls up 8 pages of results which tend to be responses to threads already existing - so far I haven't found a great list of quality components to buy. Guess I'll try new search terms.

Their triggers are highly recommended. As far as stocks I'm going with a B&C myself but it would require modification to the stock to accept your mag. I would recommend a good stock and an EGW 20MOA base for starters if you're going to be shooting out to our past 500yds. You can get them for about 45 delivered. My stevens (budget savage) shoots 1MOA on cheap ammo with no problem what so ever so I don't believe you will have any issues. Just need to find the ammo that barrel likes. Each barrel is different.

I can hit easily at 500+ with my 308 so if you're missing with a 300wm don't blame the rig blame the driver

I like the Timney's my self. SSS are great and so is rifle basix but im used to the timney and am stickin with them. But if its the 3 screw trigger they are adjustable........
