Need help from active military ref email

I received an email from a friend of mine. He's deployed and ended up meeting someone else over there that I know. He sent me an email and when I try to respond it won't let me, I get the following error message:

"name deleted for privacy" is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail."

I guess his email address didn't come through or something. Is there any way to figure out how I can reply to him? I'm using Thunderbird for email, this is the first time I've had something like this happen. Not sure if it's something to do with the Army's security protocol or what.

ANyone can look him up if they have a current AKO e-mail address in the white pages search if he is active duty, and the name and base are known
