Re: need help with consistancy or .308

Did you pre sort all the bullets, manufatures don't just use one mold when making bullets, and no too molds are exactly the same, what your seeing is the difference.

Re: need help with consistancy or .308

Check just the bullets themselves prior to loading! You will see variations in the base of bullet to the ojives! Sort them to that first then seat them by group.

However, the best way to go is sorting by the bearing lengths.

I beleive there is a go how to sticky on the top of the realoading forum.

Bullet sorting and prep

Agreed, the above is what you're missing.

Re: need help with consistancy or .308

A guy I know who shoots WAY better than me says don't bother measuring bullets before loading. Seems to work for him so I won't waste my time at my skill level.

All he shoots is SMK's so maybe that's it. I don't think I would like to buy bullets that required an extra step before loading.

Re: need help with consistancy or .308

I personally dont sort my bullets prior to seating them, but I do measure my brass and make sure that they are all very consistant.

After having used the new Redding dies, I will get different seating depths if my brass is not consistant. I only get a difference of .002 or .003 but not as bad as you are experiencing. Since the Redding die has a stop where your case cannot go further into the die, and from there the bullet is pressed into place the only difference I can see is your brass is not as even as you thought.

Double check your brass.

Re: need help with consistancy or .308

hi again
ok re trimmed brass and measured , all seems ok
heads measured using hornaday gauge all ok no big or small diff
pulled die apart looks ok, re set
so loaded up 50 rds started ok, but out of the 50 , 10 have come up short
40 measure at 2.230 to og
10 measure at 2.224 to og

those 10 felt a lot easier to seat
any ideas ??
