New Shooter Questions

I just bought a Remington 700P .308. I'm new to target shooting.

I currently reload .30-06, but that's only to save money. I just load the middle load per the Speer manual and have never deviated from it.

Questions:

What bullets do target shooters usually use? (I'm guessing not hollow point or soft point)

Any thoughts on bullet weight for .308 at or below 300 yards would also help.

(I'm currently limited to 300 yards.)

Any general suggestions would be appreciated, too. Thank you.

Re: New Shooter Questions

Lapua, Berger, and Sierra's. Match bullets of course.

You will get many different answers to which is the best! I like the Berger Bullets myself followed by Sierra.

And yes Hornday makes some fine bullets too! The 750gr Amax is the shoice a most all 50 BMG long range shooters.

Google each Mfg and read up then decide for yourself.

I have not had a 308 that I have own not like the Bergers or Sierras.

At the 300yd mark I would start with a 168gr bullet or a 155gr.

Re: New Shooter Questions

For 300 yards and in closer, I use a flat base bullet. (I'm partial to Berger's 150 flat base.) But any farther I use a boat tail. For longer distances I just go straight to the Berger 175 (not VLD). That bullet is good for me to 1K. Since that's farther than I can even see any more, that's fine for me.
