This is the reason why so many people hate microsoft. I use eXcel every day for all sorts of computation things from automotive suspension analysis to optical ray tracing to small database inventory tracking.

In my opinion, MS has added nothing useful since 1995 that makes eXcel any better, but continuously changes the file formats in order to MAKE people upgrade to the more modern package. If MS had simply invented an extensible data format for *.xls people could stick with the old versions and save moola.

Basically what MS does is to sell you a hammer, and then when you gt a new workbench, you are not allowed to use the old hammer to nail something together on the new workbench.
