Emergency dispatchers say a man in the mountains has shot at police officers in the southwestern Virginia community of Grundy and at least one deputy has been wounded.
State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the deputy was shot Sunday in Buchanan County. She had no more details. Buchanan County emergency dispatchers told WVVA-TV that four officers were shot near the Devils Branch area near Grundy at about 3 p.m. and that one officer was killed.
The station says the suspect shot at the officers with a rifle from the mountains.
Grundy Mayor Roger Powers says authorities are searching an area about six to eight miles east of the town. It is a coal mining area with a population of about 1,100. Powers says he heard unconfirmed reports that four officers had been wounded.
