Looking at trying a B&C Medalist adj. Stock. I dont care for the HS stock that came on my Rem 700 5r 300WM. Any opinons on the B&C apreciated. I cant find anyone around here that has one, is that a bad sign? Thanks

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

do you not like the feel of the hs or its just not as accurate as you had expected. I skim bedded my hs and it made a good bit of difference in the accuracy. but if you don't like the feel, thats a whole different story

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

Trey I just dont like the big palm swells, and the trigger pull angle is at about 45 degrees. I've got fairly large hands, but to get a rearward pull on the trigger, I cant get my thumb over the grip, and barely get my next 2 fingers on the handle with my pinky dangleing???

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

I had a B&C a5 on my SPS Tactical before I traded it in for my 5r .300 Win. Mag,. It's not a bad stock, and I liked that I could adjust it to fit me better.

I would put it on the 5r as well but I've been looking at the H-S adj. M24 stocks pretty hard. I think I might try one of those out instead of the B&C as the palm swell does not bother me.

Then again,. The $$$ I would save getting the B&C over the H-S would pay for alot of my favorite .300 Win. Mag. ammo (Hornady 178 TAP),..

Guess I better see if they have a long action in OD Green.

No, the stocks are NOT the same. The fore end of the stocks are pretty much the same. On the A5 stock, where the wider part starts, there is a slight little "offset" so that it gets a little lower on the barrel than on the A2; other than that, they're pretty similar. The A5 also has an Anschultz free rail intsalled in the fore end, the A2 does not. The grip and rear of the stock on the A5 is quite a bit different as well. The A2 puts the trigger "further out" (towards the muzzle) than the A5, the A5 has a built up area and a little "finger slot" kind of molding to get into the trigger. The A5 pretty much meets up with the trigger guard (almost), whereas there is much more of a gap on the A2. The A5 has a MUCH deep "thumb cut" and the whole thing sits a bit lower so you can get lower on the trigger. The A5 stock also has a space under the stock in the rear for a bag, it's not quite a "butt hook", but it's kind of intended for the same use. Obviously the A5 is adjustable for cant, length of pull, and comb. The A5 is a bit heavier than the A2, which a lot of people think it already a bit heavy. Anyway, there's some pretty subtle differences between the two, here's some photos to give you an idea of the differences I'm mentioning. I searched google, and found some photos of some SH guy's rifles with these stocks.

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

Thanks Tomcat088, I guess I'm going to have to put the feel on both, wish I could find them half way close to home, to check out. Dodge City Kansas is 5 hrs from here, might be a road trip comeing soon. I'll have to call them an see if I can get a look at their facility.

I agree with Silverfox, both are different, and you can't go wrong with either. I bought the A2 because I didn't want to pay what the A5 cost, I figured if I was going to spend that much, I'd just save some more and put it in a McMillan. I'm not trying to knock the stock, just saying that $400+ for a stock plus shipping is getting to be a bit up there, although it does have lots of features. Either way, I've found my A2 to be very comfortable, not really need adjusting (unless you wanted a drastic change in length of pull). Lots of people think they won't like my A2, but when they sit down and cuddle up with it, they really like it and are comfortable. I've later played with an A5, and I don't regret buying my A2, especially since I could buy 2 A2's for what the one A5 cost. They're both nice stocks, get what you can afford and you think will fit you, spend the rest on ammunition or put it towards better glass. You won't go wrong with either.

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

Thanks Tomcat, thats the kind of opinion I'm looking for. Did you miss the cheek adjustment, for good cheek weld, or did you use another method to get fit, or did stock fit you as is?

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

I have a Millett LRS, which has a 56mm objective, so it sits pretty high, and the stock still allows me to get what I feel is a good repeatable cheekweld. I will say that I'm not one of those people that pushes my cheek down into the stock really hard. I make good contact and use it as a reference point, but I don't point all my body weight down on the rifle through my cheek the way that some people do. I just did put a lot of my weight on my rifle through my cheek, to make a "super chipmunk cheek" (I already have chipmunk cheeks, lol). With the higher rings for my 56mm objective, and pushing down hard into the stock, it's just a little bit low, meaning it would probably take an eagle cheek pad and not pushing down quite as hard to make it fit "perfect" that way. I don't drive all my weight into the rifle through my cheek, it's just not comfortable for me, so the stock works well as it. If it's an even smaller objective (most are), then I can see how this would be an even smaller issue.

So the cheek adjustment is nice, and for people that really put a lot of their weight into the rifle through their cheek, they probably would like the adjustable cheek piece better. I place my cheek firmly enough on the stock that it's a good contact point, but not really hard. I pretty much only shoot magnums, and if you push that hard with your cheekbone on the stock, sometimes they bite back.

Re: Opinon Rem 700 stock

I have the B&C adjust cheek rest and butt in both short & long rem 700 they fit fine just a hair heavy I got a great deal on the pair could not bear to sell them I got them so low I like my mcree better due to wt but b&c fit just as nice all shooters are at home with what fits them I never had a mcmillian but would say the few I have held they would be my first choice just never got around to getting one
