I have shot a pistol for over 10 years now and I have decided that I am probably not going to get much better without some formal training. I live near Hamilton Alabama. Does anyone know where I can go to take some classes or someone that can help me get to the level that I want to be?

^^ THIS!! ^^

Without knowing what specifically you want to improve upon or what skill set you want to develop (as well as what you want to pay and where you are willing to go), it is difficult to make a recommendation. In other words...are you talking about a comprehensive course, defensive pistol, Tactical/CQB, etc.? Do you want local or regional or CONUS? Do you have time for a 3-5 day course or are you talking about something else? Etc., Etc.

Re: Pistol Training

Thanks for the replies. What I should have said was I have never had any training with a pistol before. I have shot for a long time but I am not very good. One of my biggest problems is using open sight. I scope everything but with a pistol this is not the best option for me. I need some training to get the proper fundamentals. I know the way I stand is probably wrong. Basically I want to learn the fundamentals and be able to hit what I am aiming at. A beginner course doesn't really seem right but that may be where I need to start. I work six days a week and am only off two weeks in July and about 10 days at Christmas so I cannot travel very much. I was hoping to find instruction fairly close. What do you guys think I need to do?

Re: Pistol Training

If you are interested in being fast and accurate under stress, I recommend looking into the CAR (Center Axis Relock) system taught by Paul Castle. He is based in Nashville, TN and offers a 5 day beginner's course. You can read up on the system via his website sabretactical.com

Being fluent in gun safety, semi-auto pistol operation, and range rules is important before attending. It is actually better if you have not trained extensively in other systems prior to learning the CAR system. This is not precision target shooting. This is about multiple center-mass hits under stress and being able to shoot with either hand, both eyes open. The focus is on a technique that allows you to be fast and accurate under stress. That being said, the course does not attempt to put you under the kinds of stress you encounter in an actual gunfight. I believe it does teach methods that would be effective in that kind of situation.

Most of the course concentrates on semi-auto pistol, although we also trained some with shotgun and carbine.

I took the course a few months ago and learned a lot. I feel very comfortable using this system, and am accurate enough to be effective out to 25 yards. Hopefully that's further than I will ever have to be accurate with a pistol. With any luck, I won't have to use this system at all other than enjoying an afternoon at the range.

If you are interested in being a precision target shooter, competitions, etc, then this is probably not what you want.

Best of luck to you in learning more.
