K98k= $120
ATN Scope= $300
Bases= $30
Rings= $28
1/2" Risers= $35
Drill/Tap= $59
$572

Price is on par with a used PSS, but I prefer using heavier bullets beyond 700 yards, and 8x57 has better pressures using 200-grain bullets when compared to .308 Winchester of comparable bullet weight.

Re: poor man setup

Its sure nice to have the high dollar stuff.... But you don't need it... Buy what you can afford and upgrade as money allows... As long as you get out and shoot.

I spent $1200 for this complete set up, like new condition as previous owner only shot it once: Remington 700P .308 with 26" LTR type fluted barrel, AICS 1.0, Nikon Tactical 2.5-10x44 scope, Badger base, ARMS rings and Harris bipod. It's the most I've ever paid for bolt gun, but it definitely was a deal that I couldn't refuse, and put me in the poor house. Looks like it qualifies as poor man's set up too.

Wish I woulda found a deal like this..... Great find.

Re: poor man setup

Liked that one so much I did it again.

Stevens 200 250
Adams and Bennett No Taper 1.25 cut to 18 120
no bbl nut set up 100
powdercoated black w 15% clear for matte/satin look 35
rifle basix trigger 120
used 4-16 mueller scope 80
b square bases and rings 35
custom made bolt handle (sort of shitty but free) 000
rock bipod (on the rear stud) 40
bell & carlson medalist tactical 175

total 955

got a little less than a grand in this one too and it has never shot over .5 moa. I have no complaints about accuracy in the A&B bbls but they take copper and are a bitch to keep clean. I have to use bore tech eliminator all the time but It works well.

Don't kid yourself, the mosin nagant devastated the German Army in WWII. It's a solid "minute of Nazi" all day long in trained hands.

Re: poor man setup

I think that the threshold for "poor man's setup" is $1000. In general, I don't think that you are going to have a reliable system for less than that.

Between that and $2000 is more of a "thrifty man's setup".

It's still easy to buy worthless junk in both categories.

My $1000 setup (new prices) is a Tikka T3 Lite .223 stainless with the 1-8 twist, an EGW 20MOA rail, Burris tactical 30mm rings, and SWFA 10x SS. It also has an Eagle stock pack and Harris bipod.
