Lee powder thrower, rigged up powder dump tube, RCBS powder trickler, RCBS 10/10 beam scale, magnifying glass. It definitely speeds up the process and has proven to be very accurate, the magnification in front of the scale readout takes a lot of the strain out of the process.

Re: Poor mans Prometheus

Nice system you have there, I put together a simular system with a RCBS powder dispensor and a a twisted soda straw in a drop tube.

I also glued a foam ear plug under the ballance beam arm so it did not have go down all the way when the pan was removed. The big improvement came when I used web cam like MX 3000 manual focus ( $40.) an FS viewer ( free ap )uses full screen to view the pointer on a laptop screen, no parallax or eye strain.

Actually, it is accurate and fairly efficient, It improves on a few things (1) the need to move your pan from a powder dispenser to the scale (2) the inaccuracy of reading the scale dial indicator, as well as less eye strain.

It started as a joke, ended up being pretty handy.

Re: Poor mans Prometheus

Hi B. Melick,

As you might recall I have both ( Prometheus 1.5 I found abandoned on a Texas Hwy). With a Parker tuned 10-10 or model 5-10 scales and a set up simular to the above I was under a .1 accuracy. I checked on my Prometheus but for me its a speed thing I was after about 3 rds a min. when weighing the right powder, the powder drop accuracy was plus.

However I smile every time I use the Prometheus with a web cam setup, its fun to see how many I can hit dead on. Some times I can hit 10 rds a minute that is rare( 8208xbr powder drops well)but 6 rds a min. is no problem. Best money spent ever I just wish it was 45 years sooner

Am i reading this right? You found a prometheus on the side of the highway... i dont get it... clearly this is a joke of some sort

Re: Poor mans Prometheus

The USB camera trick is the way to go, FSCamview is the freeware program I use with my 1.5 Prometheus, the big ass magnifying glass will work too, but always having to get your head in the right position can be a pain, with my cheap laptop/USB camera/FSCamview that is not a problem, plus the camera always points 90 degrees to the needles.

Re: Poor mans Prometheus

Yep just just humor about finding one on the side of the road, finding a used Promethus for sale is rare, with out a waiting list of the owners shooting buddys waiting to buy it is about like winning the lottery twice. Might as well keep your eye on the side of the Hwy looking for when driving, it could happen.

Joking aside rigging up a USB Web cam to read a ballance beam scale of any kind is a huge improvement. The system the OP built speeds things up or simular system.
