Chances are none of Russia's conventional forces would win an unrestricted fight against our conventional forces.
The Russians however have had a lot of history having all their cities and country reduced to rubble and having to fight back and build back up.
Chances are they would strongly consider going full on WWIII rather than becoming slaves to the west and bet that since their people are further down the evolution of society ladder than those in the west, they don't have as far to fall before hitting dirt and can rebuild from WWIII quicker than in the west.
The problem is the Russians stepped into a nice big well baited CIA trap that was the result of years of pressure and planning.
Now they realize they are stuck and it was a mistake, but their opponent pretty much says no peace until we totally destroy you and make you our serfs forever.
So the Russians are busy trying to decide what kind of screwed they want to be and that means a lot of potential danger in the world.
The Chinese are also probably looking at this and realize if Russia is destroyed and becomes just another serf of the west, they are next in line for an attempt at being busted back down to serfs and colonies better know their place. They have been there not all that long ago and really don't want to ever go back there again.

When Mt. St. Helens blew up in 1980, the USFS would not allow any of the "blowdown" to be harvested. Tens, if not hundreds of Square miles of perfectly good timber sat there and rotted. All the while, standing timber was harvested in other areas, further de-nuding the forest. How the hell does that make sense ?
Presently, the warshington state DNR (I assume along with the USFS) is letting the Bolt Creek fire around Index and Skykomish) "burn itself out". The gawd damned thing has been burning for close to month. At what point/when is it finally deemed critical enough to go in and put the damned thing out ? It continues to burn because the psychopaths in charge want it to burn. They want to manipulate society into believing that mankind is destroying everything in his/her gluttonous pursuit of never ending energy supplies.
