Re: Preview of Mercedes Benz Superbowl commercial
First time I heard the commercial 'preview' I said to myself: "Self... don't people at ad agencies LISTEN to the songs they use?"
Ok... I love Sympathy for the Devil. One of my favorite tunes. Great driving song. Play it loud. I'll sing along.
But the lyrics go: "Rode a tank; held a Generals rank; when the Blitzkrieg burned; and the bodies stank; pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name..." (From memory here, sorry if I am off a bit)
Given Mercedes somewhat sketchy history on that front... You know, massive collaboration in the Nazi war effort up to and including the whole 'slave labor' bugaboo... did they really think that choice of theme music through? Or are they counting on the 20-somethings this $29K car is aimed at being so historically inept that it just doesn't matter?
On the bright side, at least they didn't use the Horst Wessel song...
To Daimler-Benz credit, I was in their new Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart this past summer. I'd seen the old one and it was great. The new one is spectacular. In the old museum, the 'history' of the company ended in 1935 or so and then re-started in 1946. In the new museum, they handled the company's rather extensive involvement with the National Socialist government very forthrightly, honestly and, I thought, brilliantly.
