I have been collecting and shooting AKs for the last 10 or so years and have become quite knowlegable about them. Any way, a few months ago I decided to do something different. As you know the AK 47 is not the accurate weapon but out to 300 yds they are quite amazing. I decided to look at something that would really reach out there. I have a couple of deer rifles (a '64 Win M70 in .308 and a sporterized Mauser in 30 06) so I wasn't completely in the dark. I started reading this forun and a few others. I have always liked the Rem 700 and decided togo that direction. I went on Gunbroker and found what I was looking for, a no frills rifle with the potential to do some serious Lr shooting. I bought the 700 "Tactical" in .308 So
far here is what I have invested.
$595 Remington 700 "Tactical" including shipping
$409 Nikon Monarch 5 X 20 (free shipping)
$80 Harris bipod
$200 HS Preision Stock (5r take off)
$0 Two pounds pinto beans and old sock for back rest
And here she is

Looks really good so far!
Good shooting by the way... But last I knew five shot groups are required.

And welcome, tons of great knowledgable guys here.

Re: Really Budget Build for those on a budget!

I think it's a very sensible start, and one which many other new shooters could learn from. A few adjustments here and there might glean a slightly lower bottom line, but IMHO that's probably immaterial. The key value here is that the shooter is developing their MKI skills on a modest and generic system.

The odds that upgrading to the ultimate at this point will do anything markedly beneficial are very, very small. The money should be concentrated in developing the skills, and not in developing the rifle. Without the skills, no measure of equipment perrfection will improve the outcome in a substantial manner.

Nice lookin' stick.

I have that same Monarch with Nikoplex...you'll likely need a 20MOA base to get much beyond 600yd due to its limited elevation adjustment but other than that, you should be good to go with that equipment for thousands of rounds.

I agree with you. In fact, that's exactly where I'm at. The skills are more important at my level than the tools.

Welcome to the bolt gun shooting. But just a heads up, its all fun and games until you start reloading. Then it opens up a whole new world of accuracy. Nice looking stick.

I did almost the same thing with a SPS tactical in 223. I put a B&C A5 on it, bedded the action and base. I went with a weaver tactical FFP scope. I didn't shoot only factory ammo through it but started with 69SMk's and XBR 8208. I had a winner on the fourth charge and am still running it to this day. I don't have any problem getting consistent hits on 6" steel at 600 yards with it nor does it have a problem printing sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards all day long. I have right at 1800 rounds on it and the only thing I have done is increased my OAL about .015 due to it growing a little
