my savage 116 in 300 rum has gotten to the point where its no fun to shoot anymore(i'm just getting old and soft maybe?)where can i send this thing to get a brake installed where it won't cost a fortune, won't take forever and will be done right?i really like the looks and what i've read about the jp tank type deal and think thats what i'll use,but am open to other ideals.any thoughts would be welcome,thanks...gm

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

Had the 'smith at the Gander Mountain in Roanoke VA put the same JP brake on one of my rifles, as have three of my friends here on four rifles between them. You're in middle Tennessee, a bit of a drive to Roanoke but not too bad for a day trip. They're easy to find, right next to I-81.

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

I do them. Guaranteed dead nuts concentric to the bore.

A Vias is a nice small efficient brake that is not too loud.

I had these guys put one on a 338wm. Was very happy with the results. That and a trigger job took about a month.

hmmm... Ahlmans is right in my state - about 1hr away or so... just called them and they said that even if you get an aftermarket break - they'll install it. They open it up with a tool that matches it to the bore etc... now i gotta decide if i want the FTE or apa little bastard.

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

I have a vais on a couple different rifles. much quieter then any other brake I have witnessed. Another advantage is it doesnt require any allignment to the barrel as far as rotation.

It works, but since i have never shot two identical rifles with a different brake, i cant say which works better.

and I had two brakes installed by RW Snyder, and two done by Kampfeld Custom (one was a full build).

Karl Feldkamp (KampfeldCustom) is the smith I use for everything now. His work is top notch and while he is a little backlogged, Good work is worth waiting for.
Every date he has given me was within a week of shipping it back to me. Both of the brakes he installed cannot be seen or felt when screwed down. It looks like the ports are machined into the barrel. If anyone wants pics of his work, shoot me a PM. I dont work for him, but a loyal customer who has constantly been impressed with his work.

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

All of these suggestions are excellent, but I think there's an underlying issue here.

If the rifle no longer suits your needs, why are you puttng more money into it?

I would leave it unaltered and get my money out of it by selling it. That would make a new gun, that better meets your need, easier to afford.

I will not own a rifle I don't like to shoot. It serves no useful purpose and it ties up perfectly good money.

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

I don't believe its the gun he's unhappy with. Its that unforgiving kick he's upset with. If that the case follow through with the break. If you could settle with a smaller caliber follow Greg's choice.

If anyone knows any info on Kirby Allen would you pm me.

Re: recomend a smith to install a brake

still on the fence but i'm leaning toward the 4 port muscle brake or the jp howitzer unit.i think this thing will be a hoot once you can sit down and shoot 50 or 60 rounds with out it killing you.
