Hello,
I recently put together a trainer type rimfire rifle and I am looking for a decent scope. I was hoping I could find something solid for under 500 that will work from 50-300. I stated with a little 3-9 Vortex but the glass is horrible and tracking is not accurate. It's going on a 30moa rail so shouldn't need extreme amount of adjustments.

For getting started a SWFA Super Sniper in 10X or 12X would be a good choice. I had one on my rimfire for a long time and it had a good feature set for use on a rimfire. Pretty good glass, plenty of elevation, good tracking, and the parallax was good down to about 10 meters I think.

I'm trying out the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16 right now and so far so good. The clicks don't feel super awesome but the tracking appears to be good based on my initial tracking test. Other than that it's pretty well packed with features for the money like a FFP reticle, parallax down to close range, pretty good optical performance, there isn't a lot not to like about this scope. I'm looking forward to doing a live fire tracking test when I get some time.

I've actually had my eye out for a used 10x-12x great scopes surprised how well they hold there value. Cant justify paying the same price used as they sold for new.

Get a new one. For what you want to do, one of these will work great and if you decide to go to a fancier scope later, you already know the SS has good resale value.

Im running the swfa ss 6x and I can hit small shit out too about 250 yds with it.I have also used the10x ss out to 350 yds but the 6x is just so much easier for me to get behind. They are both a lot of scope for the money.

In my experience with 22s and long range, it's important to get something with the ability to zoom at 10-15x range. Spotting your trace and/or splash is super critical for follow-up shots at matches. A 10-15x makes that infinitely easier beyond 75-100yds.

I've been using a Single Tango 6 4-24x and Burris XTR2 3-15x on my 22lr's but would definitely consider the SWFA SS series, Diamondback Tactical FFP or Athalons if I had to do it over again.

I picked up a SWFA 3-15 FFP during Black Friday for my .22 for $500. Good power range, parallax down plenty close, plenty of elevation, good simple workable reticle, and added some zero stop shims to not get lost.

Likely a bunch of good options out there but I am happy with it and right at your $500 budget.

I am in the same boat. I have found a couple of Burris xtr 2's for the 600-630 range right on here. I have them on several guns and love them. That being said, I have considered the Vortex but have two problems with it. First I had two PST Viper FFP that failed in the field. Both reticles went sideways on me. That being said I am very confident in the Razor series not failing. So going with a less priced scope concerns me. Also, no zero stop is a no go for me. So I am looking for the Midas tac 4-16 and used Burris XTR 2's .
