My brother just got a Rock River Arms LAR-5 Varmint A4 with the standard A2 Stock.

When you fire it. You can hear the buffer spring compress and release. I think it is a normal sound for this rifle.

A friend of his told him it wasn't and he should have it checked.

Nether of us has experience with an AR-15 rifle.

So is this normal?

Yes it is normal. It can be lessend by greasing the inside of the buffer tube. Just be careful if your going to be using it in very cold weather. Had mine give me some trouble during a winter hunt in South Dakota. Not a big deal just something to be aware of.

Its normal. One of my husbands favorite stories is raising his hand on the BRM range first time behind an M16 and the range NCO asking what he wanted. He said he thought something was wrong with his rifle because it made that funny noise. The NCO lauhged and said its fine, you'll get used to it.

Don't worry about it, and don't get all nutty with the grease. The system was never meant to be lubed. It can create suction in the receiver extension and slow the buffer causing FTF FTE issues. Just shoot it, and get used to it. Copy that? NO GREASE. Light lube? Maybe, but don't butter it up unless you want issues. Ask any GI or read the FM's or TM's for the weapon. You clean the recoil system with CLP, AND WIPE IT DRY BEFORE YOU REASSEMBLE.

Nobody uses the weapon harder than the military, why not follow the way they do things?
