Last week I was in a pawnshop and saw a Mod 28 in the case. They were busy and I could not get anybody to show it to me, but it appeared to be in minty condition with the battered blue box.

I called the next day and had them put it back for me and just picked it up. Wow! The only visible sign of wear is a mark on the recoil shield where the cylinder pin has dragged a bit. The action is buttery smooth. I really have no use for a 6" N-frame .357, but an old friend of mine has had one for years and I always had a yen for one. This gun was jam-packed with heavy grease.

It will be a load of fun to put some .38 wadcutter target loads through.

Funny that you mentioned truck guns. A man had one for sale on an auction site and that is what he had used his for. As a bonus, I got this one for considerably less than a new K-frame and it is in near new condition.

Re: S & W Mod 28

Palehorse, I bought my first N-frame about 30 years ago and it was a 6" blued .41. I was in college, broke and should have bought that revolver about like a ticket on the Titanic, but I sure enjoyed it.

I took the 28 to the range yesterday and ran about 100 semiwadcutters through it. I just took what ammo I had on hand and it did about 3" at 35'. There is room for improvement. I have heard the actions on these guns are not as smooth as the other N-frames, but this one is slick enough that I don't think I am going to take the sideplate off and polish it.

I've had 3 28's and the actions have been every bit as good as on my 27's and 29's.
I think the lack of top strap checkering and matte rather than high polish finish were the only difference and reason the 28 was more of a "working" gun.

Re: S & W Mod 28

The Model 28 was my Duty Revolver during my career with the Anchorage Police Dept. Great gun, you'll never shoot it out, I've tried. When I retired it was given to me by my Department.

It holds a lot of meaning, but that don't stop me from shooting it.
