Re: Savage 10 @ Wally World?
IMO this is one of the best buys in the rifle world right now. It's great to do a build on, but it's also great in stock form to use to hunt with.
I have several hunting buddies that bought these things a few years ago. Now, they weren't doing builds on them, but they were using them like they came. Heck, they didn't even change the scopes on them. At the time they had cheaper Simmons scopes. Now, I know some of them have the Simmons and some of them have an even crappier Bushnell. They all loved them. In fact, I liked them so much I told one of them that if he ever got rid of his, to let me know first. His was in .243 Winchester. He ended up getting hit with some hard times and had to sell it so of course I bought it. I know he hated getting rid of it as he said out of the many guns he had it was one of his favorites. I also would like to mention that he is talking about buying one now because he liked it so much.
So anyway, I got it from him and I got a variety of bullets to try. At this time I still had the cheap Simmons on there also. I was simply amazed. Both the cheap Federal Powershok and the Winchester Power Points shot around .8" groups at 100 yards consistently. Then I tried Hornady SST's and got around the same groups. I also tried Hornady BTSP, and these shot the worst out of anything I've ever shot in the rifle and they still shot under 1.5" groups.
Then I tried working up a reload for it and to my surprise one of the first combinations I tried shot .45-.5" groups pretty consistently. This is from a stock rifle that was $400 with crappy rings and a crappy $30 Simmons scope. I just couldn't believe it. I shot it like this for several months until I finally got tired of the scope. I took off the scope and sold it for $40, and I threw the rings in the trash. I put a decent scope on it and a decent set of rings. I actually re-used the bases that were on it as much as I hate to admit it. They seemed fine and have held up great.
I've been shooting it like that since. When I wear the barrel out I plan to start a build on it, but it's just been so accurate that I've yet to see a reason at all to do anything to it. This thing has quickly become one of my favorite rifles I have. In it's stock form it's also pretty light weight and points great which makes it nice if I do decide to hunt with it.
It was one of those things where I planned to do a build with it when I initially got it, but it just impressed me so much I've kept it like it is. If I ever needed another rifle I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. The only downside I've found is that the stock is a little flimsy, but when it shoots as well as it does, it doesn't bother me too much.
Another friend has one in 30-06 and his shoots just as well. I love that thing too. I told him if he ever sells it to let me know and I will buy that one too. I don't think he is going to sell it though as he likes it about as much as I do.
