Sorry if this has been asked and answered, the Google search engine didn't turn anything up...

I was picking up some 9mm ammo at W.W. today and this store happens to sell rifles. At the checkout I noticed a Savage .308 in the display- model 10 FXP.

I've been thinking about picking up another Savage to build from, and at under $400 (Accutrigger, synthetic stock)I was wondering whether it was still a decent buy when I throw away the glass and the stock...

I can find nothing on the Savage website as to specs on the barrel- which model "10" is this if you strip off the Wally World FXP package moniker?

    Wannashootit,

I pretty much did the same thing with a Remington 700-V in .308 from Dick's Sporting Goods.

    It's probably a special run.

I checked with Remington to make sure the barreled action was the same as the standard 700 varmint.

You may want to do the same.

I think what is happening is that the manufacturers are doing this to accomodate people like us.

see if you can measure the screw spacing and its a good deal when you look at an action only and selling off the scope and stock, but, look at a stevens on gunbroker if you just want a donor action. and there was an action for sale here too for under $300 i think

    Hi,
It's a Savage model 10 plastic stock (F) package (XP). I bought one in January and did a build on it. It is a center feed blind magazine (4 rounds). The barrel is a 1:10 twist. The bases (2 piece) that come with it are fine unless you want a 20MOA base. The rings were mostly OK and the scope was much better than I thought it would be. That being said, I was building a LR rig so I replaced the base, rings and scope as well as the stock and barrel. I did reuse the rings and scope on another plinker rifle so not all was lost. I did not shoot it before replacing the stock and barrel so I have no idea how it was right out of the box. But I can tell you that it's a shooter now!

IMO this is one of the best buys in the rifle world right now. It's great to do a build on, but it's also great in stock form to use to hunt with.

I have several hunting buddies that bought these things a few years ago. Now, they weren't doing builds on them, but they were using them like they came. Heck, they didn't even change the scopes on them. At the time they had cheaper Simmons scopes. Now, I know some of them have the Simmons and some of them have an even crappier Bushnell. They all loved them. In fact, I liked them so much I told one of them that if he ever got rid of his, to let me know first. His was in .243 Winchester. He ended up getting hit with some hard times and had to sell it so of course I bought it. I know he hated getting rid of it as he said out of the many guns he had it was one of his favorites. I also would like to mention that he is talking about buying one now because he liked it so much.

So anyway, I got it from him and I got a variety of bullets to try. At this time I still had the cheap Simmons on there also. I was simply amazed. Both the cheap Federal Powershok and the Winchester Power Points shot around .8" groups at 100 yards consistently. Then I tried Hornady SST's and got around the same groups. I also tried Hornady BTSP, and these shot the worst out of anything I've ever shot in the rifle and they still shot under 1.5" groups.

Then I tried working up a reload for it and to my surprise one of the first combinations I tried shot .45-.5" groups pretty consistently. This is from a stock rifle that was $400 with crappy rings and a crappy $30 Simmons scope. I just couldn't believe it. I shot it like this for several months until I finally got tired of the scope. I took off the scope and sold it for $40, and I threw the rings in the trash. I put a decent scope on it and a decent set of rings. I actually re-used the bases that were on it as much as I hate to admit it. They seemed fine and have held up great.

I've been shooting it like that since. When I wear the barrel out I plan to start a build on it, but it's just been so accurate that I've yet to see a reason at all to do anything to it. This thing has quickly become one of my favorite rifles I have. In it's stock form it's also pretty light weight and points great which makes it nice if I do decide to hunt with it.

It was one of those things where I planned to do a build with it when I initially got it, but it just impressed me so much I've kept it like it is. If I ever needed another rifle I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. The only downside I've found is that the stock is a little flimsy, but when it shoots as well as it does, it doesn't bother me too much.

Another friend has one in 30-06 and his shoots just as well. I love that thing too. I told him if he ever sells it to let me know and I will buy that one too. I don't think he is going to sell it though as he likes it about as much as I do.

Just buy a stevens 200 if you are going to ditch the scope and stock. You will save a little cash, which you can put toward glass/mounts or replace the trigger with a riflebasix unit. I built a stevens 308 with a mcgowen ss barrel, rb trigger, sss recoil lug and tactical bolt handle, choate tactical sa stock, and millet trs1 4-16x50 on top with a warne 20moa for under $800 total (including shipping). I swapped the barrel myself (already had the action wrench and barrel nut wrench and the go/no go gages). I sold the millet and made $100 and put a vortex viper I had laying around on top, and painted the stock and barrel and now it is my favorite gun, not to mention it shoots under 1/2moa at 100 with fgmm 168 (probably better with a better driver). It's in the back of this pic.

Re: Savage 10 @ Wally World?

I bought my 10FP in 308 from Walmart in 2002 or 2003, during the early days of the Accutrigger for $349, with the cheapo plastic stock, no bases/rings or scope.

It immediately shot Federal powershok 150gr @ less than 1 moa at any distance I tried, from 100 to 600.

That injectin molded plastic stock HAD to go though, so I bedded it into a B&C, which improved things to less than 1/2 MOA.

Now it has 2500+ rounds through it, and has never skipped a beat. Not a fancy rifle, but it just flat WORKS.

I have bought 4 Savages, either barely used or not used at all. 3 Short actions(all accutrigger) and 1 Long, All for $300 or less. Buying an action for the same price seems dumb to me when you can sell the rest of the stuff to recoup some money. Northland Shooters Supply sells Stevens actions for 235 a Piece. I still think buying a complete Stevens is a better deal if you can find one. I have heard of some sporting goods stores selling them for $189, I see them in CALIFORNIA for $300 new as a package so you should be able to find one better I think. Either way if you shop around you should be able to pick up a complete donor for $300 sell the stuff you don't want and your sitting pretty good.
