I've been working up a new load in a new rifle.
It's a Savage 10FCP HS Precision 308 w/ a SS 16x op top. I've got some Win brass, CCI primers, and a jug of Reloder 17. I want to set it up for long range paper punching.
Decided to start out with some 200gr Matchkings at .010" off the lands. Unfortunately the Savage has a short throat so it's stuffed in there a ways..
First accuracy node was 44.5gr for a velocity of around 2455 fps. That was good for a couple 4 shot groups in the .5-.6" range. Above that it started to open up till it was over an inch around 46 gr., and then it shrank back down. Next accuracy node was at 48 gr. where I put 4 shots into .250" at around 2635 fps.
It was pretty compressed. Have to do some backup on that one. These loads are all safe in my rifle, may not be in yours so start low & work up. No pressure signs, brass all mics out OK, easy bolt lift, seems GTG at least in these cool temps (50f today).
So far I'm happy with the results. 200 grains at over 2600 should be good past 1000K yds no problem. Considered trying the 190 SMK since my throat is short, but not sure what I'd be gaining.?.?
