For a $400 budget, what scope do you recommend for silhouette and accurate target (up to 100 yards) shooting?
The rifle is a Savage Mark 2 G and I already have a Muller APV. The scope is fine but I find the reticule to be too thick. I’m also wondering if I a higher magnification would not be better.

I’m a little confused with the following contradiction:
On one hand, many recommend very high power magnification variable scopes (like the old Japanese 8-32 Tasco ).

On the other hand, many believe that at those magnifications, the glass must be top notch (like a $3000 S&B). They believe that buying a cheaper scope will have too much of distortion to be useful past X10 magnification.

So which type/brand of scope do you recommend (magnification, reticule, brand)?

Thanks,

I have a bushnell 3200 10x fixed power on a savage MK II tr and I routinely shoot
Out to 200 yards with it to ips steel plates. The mill dot and turrets are very nice
And the scope has repeatable accuracy. And if you shop carefully for $400 you
Could even get a good set of rings.

I have a Sightron II 6.5x20 on a BSA Martini INt. Mark II target 22. The current version they are making is 6x24. You can find it for sale for ~ $400 with a plex reticle, mil-dots/dots etc are a little more.

I went with Sightron because during the winter we have an indoor range at 50 feet and shoot a (off hand) team match one day a week for ten weeks. The Sightron will focus down to 11 yards, most of standard hunting/target scopes won't go down further than 75 yards...

It works well the rest of the year for the 100 & 200 yards stuff.

Re: Scope for 22lr target and silhouette

Reticle is nobrainer: target dot. Get the largest you can get. When you get the "shakes" you shoot better with a large dot. The Sightron 6-24x42 Sil is an exellent scope with an ideal sized dot. The Leupold target dots are too small. Having said that I use a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20x40LR(30mm sf)target Leupold Dot on sil and field target.

For Silhouette I like adjusting sights for a mid hit but aiming top of back. To me it's a more defined aiming spot.

One of the secrets of the scope world is the old style Bushnell 4200 series 44mm AO scopes. Both the 8-32 and the 6-24 have exceptional glass and they are reliable. These used to be B&L's top line scopes before Bushnell bought the company.

Warbird, how's the eye relief and exit pupil on the 8-32 on 24x? I'm looking to replace a lower quality 6-24x44 on my target 10/22. The Mueller Target dot has more magnification than I need (24x is plenty for me) and gets rave reviews over at rimfirecentral.com but I've heard that when the 8-32 is at 32x you have to be positioned perfectly due to the small exit pupil. Since most people apparently leave it turned up I haven't been able to get any opinions on what its like at 24x.
