Sensitive home-made wind direction (not just NSEW)

I am trying to make a sensitive home-made wind direction (angle) device to try to take most of the guesswork out of the wind hold value. I drew a semi-circle with 10-degree interval markings, placed a cardboard triangle in a slit in a straw at each end, and fastened the straw with a lubricated needle above a cardboard surface. My concern is that it will not be sensitive enough and/or there is too much friction for an accurate reading. Has anyone made something like this with decent success?

try licking your finger and holding it up, or picking up a handful of grass and throwing it in the air...

I am just trying to maximize the accuracy I get. It would also be nice to have something to reference when I attempt to gauge wind without equipment.

+1, this is what I do when I need a quick dope on wind.

A good DIY method that I use is small squeezy bottle of graphite powder lock lubricant. These are cheap to get and a bit more sensitive than a tuft of grass.
